I feel that. I have ADHD, but often wonder if I have BPD or if I am Autistic.

@Cribsy As someone with all three, I think that they might run together more often than people realize. I've noticed a lot of people in online autistic communities have BPD. ADHD and especially autistic people tend to grow up with a lot of unmet needs and social rejection because the majority of people don't understand what they need at a deep level. I bet especially if one or both parents are neurotypical (or unknowingly neurodivergent, but force social norms out of their own defenses). That could create a lot of rejection trauma, which might later manifest as BPD. I'm still a freshman in college, but I hope to one day do academic research on the possible overlap of autism and BPD/personality disorders

@Cribsy I often wonder if I also have autism but I’m currently diagnosed with BPD

getting diagnosed is super important because a lot of BPD symptoms overlap with bipolar. if you have bipolar and not BPD, it is treatable with medications. not to mention, knowing you have BPD helps you make an effort to stop manipulative or apathetic tendencies. DBT can help people a lot, too.

@Noma Anyways as long as youre not telling people you have bpd when youre not properly diagnosed you should be fine. talk about it with a psychiatrist or therapist if you have access to one. they can help you from there.

@Noma For me, i didn't know of BPD before getting diagnosed. i have PTSD too which makes someone much more likely to have BPD.

@Noma UHH also keep in mind BPD is primarily based off of things thatve occurred in childhood. whether thats environmental factors, trauma, etc. though theres no solid evidence of it being genetic, you are also more likely to have it if a parent has it (its inconclusive because its possible that its a learned thing) idk what youve been through but keep that all in mind when thinking about BPD.

unfortunately, getting diagnosed with borderline is something that is extremely difficult to achieve — but every person i’ve met who has multiple symptoms, including myself, are more than likely to have it. i see that ADD/ADHD is tagged on this post as well and assuming that you are 18-20 like your profile says, i would talk to your therapist/psychiatrist (if you have one of either of those) and see if maybe the ADD/ADHD was a misdiagnosis. i was diagnosed with it at 13 before finding out at 15 that i had bpd and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (both of these disorders are very commonly misdiagnosed as ADD and/or ADHD)! i know alike has a strict 18+ policy as well so if you are -18 (which i doubt but it could be possible), itll be especially hard to be diagnosed. in fact, the majority of people are made to wait until theyre 18 to be even evaluated as its possible for symptoms to be “grown out of” (the only reason i was diagnosed at the age i was is because it was.. literally obvious i had borderline 😭😭 im a train wreck fr). but i would just talk to a professional and if that fails, i ALWAYS tell people to self diagnose if they need to (assuming they dont have any other options and have done their research)

@Matanane_Malia self diagnosis is not smart, especially not with a personality disorder like BPD. always talk to a professional before telling people you have something.

@Noma + its ESPECIALLY dangerous with BPD because it overlaps so much with bipolar. never ever tell people you have a serious condition if you havent talked to a professional first pleaseeeee its okay to be unsure if you have something or not and to be like "huh maybe i have this" but at that point you should look into discussing it with a medical professional and/or get an actual diagnosis. Speculations are valid but claims are not. OH also most people are still eligible to be diagnosed with BPD if theyre under 18, however its labeled more as "Showing the signs of having BPD" on the diagnosis ((It literally just means they have it)) I was diagnosed at like 15 💀

@Noma no one just goes around and tells people they have disorders if they think they have it because of a symptom or two, first of all. i mentioned that you should only self diagnose if A) if youve done your research — THOROUGH. research, and B) if professional diagnosis is unavailable.

@Matanane_Malia i also forgot to mention that getting diagnosed with borderline really didnt do much to benefit me because they do offer dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) even if you arent diagnosed! the best thing they could do anyway is possibly just give you mood stabilizers but since it is a personality disorder and not a mood disorder (like bipolar), there isnt much else they can do. i say dont sweat it!! <3
