I think singing is really helpful. The words are something for your brain to focus on that is different than the trigger, and the sound and feel of it is self-soothing. I have a really hard time being in cars because of an accident, so I pretty much sing to the radio the entire time I'm in the car. My husband has learned to accept this haha
