Does anyone else get told that just because you have ADHD doesn't mean you can use it as an "excuse"?

Growing up after my diagnosis, I started taking medicine but didn’t even really understand why til I was much older and in high school. The reason for this was my parents never emphasized my ADHD or told me anything about it because they wanted me to know that I was just as capable as anyone else. Well flash forward now with the experience my parents and I have and let’s just leave it at their huge regret for not filing a 504 for me in school. I know way more about the disorder now and it can be both a blessing and a curse. We need more strategies to deal with it for sure, but it shouldn’t have to be a disadvantage. Rather, we need reform in education and the workplace so that people are aware of it and what to do about it.

Yeah. I mean ADHD isn’t an excuse it’s the reason. Our brains work different and need reasonable accommodations. The issue is when NTs don’t want to hear either…..

Yeah, teachers, therapists, other neurotypicals that don’t understand. ❤️

Yeah, I've been told that. Funny thing is, it is my mom, who has ADHD, who says that to me. She tells me that "it is not an excuse. Since you know you have it, you need to compensate for it and if you don't, that's on you". It's frustrating.
