Can you get a diagnosis for mental health from the NHS? Is there any point? I've had an awful experience so far not being taken seriously šŸ˜£ I just worry that I will struggle to hold down a job without an official diagnosis protecting me

Yes... But be prepared for the triage and wait and triage and wait system. Depending on the conditions to be diagnosed with, the GP *may* be able to do that, but the chances are you will see a psych nurse then a psychologist and if required, a psychiatrist, the last one is when you can get medication. Hassle though it may feel like, diagnosis is such an important step to get the help and support you need, also when I told HR at work my diagnoses they said it puts me under the Equalities Act which means the bosses can't just fire without having put measures to help in first.

I got diagnosed with depression and anxiety immediately from my doctor but only got further 5+ years down the line when Iā€™ve been to a psychiatrist. Still waiting for an ASD diagnosis 18 months down the line

Doubts are normal but you shouldn't have to suffer. You have a condition, and its making you feel the way you do, nobody else. Your experiences are your own. I do wish you the best, and hope you get the support you need.

It took me 3 and a half years to get diagnosed with my adhd. It is as said above. You have to be prepared and be proactive. Make a nuisance of yourself. If they haven't called you back, call them. If you feel things aren't moving along keep pestering. I was lucky that my mum helped me with my paperwork and the like. She also came with me to my assessment. If you have someone to support you, ask for their help. Preferably someone who has known you for a while. Come up with talking points between you, and questions you want to ask. Also you can ask then to support you with things you struggle with, or things that need clarification. If possible, see if they can go with you to the appointment, for support and to keep you grounded. You need to make your intent clear and don't sugar coat anything. Make them know exactly how much your condition effects your everyday life. It's funny, because they ask you to do everything that you struggle with, in order to get a diagnosis. It's a really backwards system. It also didn't help, that I fell through the net as a child. It's unfortunately so hard to get any diagnosis when you're an adult. Keep at it though, I diagnosis is such a useful thing to have. It opens a lot of doors with getting the support you need.

@Jeezuskrys That's actually so helpful to hear because they just have me doubting myself. The system is definitely set up backwards...
