How do you stop being depressed? I mean I know riding the wave is an option but it's been 3 days and I'm miserable and my hair is gross and oily because I last showered a week ago... surely there's a better way?

@MerkyMountainGoat I feel like I should specify, it's for a week and it just started.

Overcoming depression is no easy feat. It takes time unfortunately, but it's time well spent. Take things one step at a time. One thing that helped me a ton was taking walks whenever possible. Put in some earbuds/headphones and listen to your preferred music. If you wanna take it a bit further, don't use music at all and just listen to everything around you. Take in your surroundings. Notice all the details around you. The sounds, the air/breeze, the sights, etc. This small step can lead to a lot of mental clarity, which can aid in thinking over your worries and concerns. You can overcome this obstacle! Don't doubt yourself and keep pushing forward!

Have you just started taking sertraline? For me, trying to "not be depressed" I think makes it worse...as I'm focusing on how much I'm not ok. While "thinking happy thoughts" is worse, I find riding the wave and just making it to tomorrow my best option when starting new medication or changing dosages. I'm incredibly impatient surrounding changes, so I try put my self-questioning of whether a new medication is working or not into a mental time-released dropbox. I do find it productive to keep a journal of how I feel throughout the day so that when I go back to my doctor, I can at least give specific feedback of moods/symptoms/side effects and when they began/ended.

@anubisplane I haven't just started it, but there was a change in my life that caused it for sure. My dad, stepmom, and little sister is staying in my house, a 3 bedroom, alongside my mom, stepdad, other little sister, and I. It's crowded, overwhelming, and I keep ending up trapped in my room. I can't fix my circumstance, but this just is not helping. Also, I really like your username!
