I’m feeling like I want to leave college. I know it’s only been 1 year. I feel like I’m gonna disappoint my family by saying it. To be honest, I was already feeling stressed, I just dismissed it it being my first year. Everyone says you’re smart why would you drop out of college or why would you drop out for one class. It actually hasn’t been one class. It’s just this last class that pushed me. I don’t know if I really want to do it. I feel like my mom is gonna tell me that I’m going to be wasting my brain. My major is psychology and I feel it can be a little judgmental (from a science point of view), like what we have isn’t normal. Any advice?

As someone who did drop out of school and regretted it, I definitely can understand how you’re feeling(at least to a certain degree). My mom was pretty upset at first but honestly just wanted the best for me. But I wish I could have found a way to make it work. Maybe you can try doing part time and take less classes so you have more time to devote to your assignments? Or get a tutor(a lot of schools have free tutoring programs)? I had different health issues going on as well as anxiety which made school especially hard, it sucked that it felt so difficult for me but other people in my class were able to find a way to get through it and I couldn’t but sometimes you have to have grace and kindness towards yourself. Maybe one day I’ll go back to school and I need this time off from it. Ultimately you should do what feels right for you even if other people feel like it’s a mistake or will be upset. Try and really dig into why you want to leave college and see if there are any alternatives and if not then just do it! Hope you figure out what to do and I’m here if wanna talk more about it!

i agree about psychology still being narrow minded - i am currently taking a psych class. however, maybe your motivation to get through it can be educating people? also i’ve thought about dropping out but think about it this way: do you want to have to work nonstop just to make ends meet or get thru school so you can have a supportive career in a field you are interested in?

I definitely agree with what Jewelz said. Try to find other options first, like tutoring or part time, before you make the decision. That being said, I dropped out after a semester, and two years later I don’t regret it in the slightest. I’m still intelligent, I’m just not wired for a school setting. My best advice is to try and line up a job you could live off of for the next 2-4 years, and do that. Manufacturing is a great place for that too (just stay away from the RV/motorhome industry, it fluctuates a scary amount). I got a job as a CNC operator and I’m pretty comfortable now. Just build up skills in the job you choose, and get certifications that’ll get you more opportunities. I also looked at phlebotomy, but it wasn’t for me. Still a growing industry for that though, so it could be an option too.
