No bit once you have a condition that deals with the mind they sure do like to playmate you like you're stupid and ignorant. I get playmates all the time because my doctors don't understand adjustment disorder with anxiety. They don't ask me why I have that condition. Well I finally messed up the information in hopes they quit treating me like my IQ is 5

To me been a female affect everything
39d
Being assigned female clealer directly impacted how much ive been taken seriously and diagnosed with things, I was told repeatedly my chronic pain was from having large breasts but 5 years post top surgery and its only gotten worse and we still dont know whats wrong with me. Also speaking of top surgery, due to being trans I wasn't given adequate care by an urgent care doctor for my top surgery and my right nipple has been irreparably damaged to the point that it just looks like a lower case 'e'
44d
I've been treated like a liar or a drug seeker
52d
I feel like no one never takes me seriously I feel like I'm kind of judged per se
66d
Everytime I go to doctor they always bring up my weight because Iām a woman. I have lost over 250lbs and still get it ,itās annoying
67d
I think men are believed more readily by doctors
162d
As a man people and Healthcare persons just want you to man up and always assume your lying or making it up or over exaggerating. I don't ask for help or what's wrong till I absolutely have to and then to get the man up speech they wonder why we don't open up

A miscarriage was "just a bad period"
53d
@Shan1997 that's not ok I'm so sorry

Yes yes yes

Dismissal of symptoms and pain and refusing to do more tests. I remember going in to get an IUD and I was told that before I show up, I need to take an ibuprofen. Worst pain of my life š and I couldn't walk for two days afterwards. And the nurse complimented me saying how well I behaved because I didn't scream. She then went on to tell me that adult women who come in scream in pain. I had tears going down my face and she complimented me on not screaming. Don't ever tell me again it was just a pinch.

I went to the doctor once extremely sick. The only thing the doctor wanted to do at urgent care was a pregnancy test. After going to the emergency room, I found out I had two viruses at once that could've killed me. I even told them I'm a lesbian.
413d
I was born male, but I'm not really fussed about how I'm perceived. My problem is that all of the symptoms I had for ASD and ADHD were stereotypically feminine traits, so they were ignored for years, as I didn't fit the stereotypical "loves trains and runs around" male traits of these conditions
419d
(For reference, im trans ftm). One doctor refused to give me my anxiety meds bc "with everything going on with the... uhhh.. gender stuff, it's too complicated of a case for me. But it's a free country and all.."
421d
Every time I say my stomach hurts I must be on my period or pregnant. Once I went back to the er several hours after they let me go because I was bleeding anally and the FEMALE doctor insisted on doing a rectal exam to confirm that's where the blood was coming from. I think I know the difference between actually bleeding and period blood, I'm 33. Also I have an IUD and don't have periods.
423d
being a woman means i only get gaslighting not medical care.
1
@amissundastood I'm so sorry
435d
It's called gaslighting, I was fobbed off with saying I had fibromyalgia when I knew it was not just that, and trust me chronic pain patients are a majority of the time gaslit, we are seen as time wasters and drug seekers, anyway turns out I have an autoimmune disease which is life threatening, I'm not responding to any treatments they give me, then they said, if we had caught it sooner, that made me so mad
PED is not just caused by Chlamydia, it can be caused by any type of infection in that area, i got it from a laparoscopy, one of my fallopian tubes got infected from the procedure, causing it, so your Dr was wrong there, I've never had Chlamydia
Basically been raped by gynecologists. Didn't used to be able to get birth control pills without a vaginal exam. I have vaginismus. The muscles tighten and I can't control it. The doctors thought I was being difficult and would just shove their way in while I was in horrible pain. Once I nearly passed out.
451d
I know this isnāt always the case, but all the males I know who also have EDS have all been diagnosed much, much, much sooner than I was even though my symptoms had been ongoing since childhood for myself and most of the guyās symptoms only started fairly recently.
It's affected it quite badly. Doctors dismiss me all the time because im a slightly overweight AFAB. Im also trans (FTM) and that makes it all the bit more uncomfortable. Especially as on any issues to do with my lower abdomen, doctors and family mostly care about fertility most when I probably won't ever even birth a child because I am a man.
@NolBigGuy I'm so so sorry
I was once told that only overweight, depressed, middle aged women could get fibromyalgia and that it was just a fob off illness to make them quiet, BY A MEDICAL PRACTITIONER. I am overweight, depressed, but not middle aged. So apparently I didn't fit the criteria! I fought it and got my diagnosis along with the hundred and one others. Don't let them break you into suffering in silence ā¤ļø

Being medically gaslight, dismissed, told itās not as bad as I claim (like I want to pay medical bills when I donāt have to, I canāt imagine someone doing that for fun and why would I come here unless I really have too?!) and or that nothing is wrong and itās all in my head (which isnāt that a medical problem too?!) bc Iām female.
I'm trans and have been on testosterone for 5 1/2 years and pass very well (I haven't been misgendered in years, except on the phone), so every time I see a new doctor/nurse and they ask me any questions that are gender related, I have to explain, and I never know how they'll respond.
@jam064 that must be difficult
456d
Every time I say something is wrong with my stomach they say it's my period and do a pregnancy test. I've had an IUD since 2015 (on my second one) and I've had like 3 periods since then.
@WitchyWoman89 I'm so sorry
457d
Since I was 13-15, Iāve been receiving trans healthcare through the trans clinic at my local Childrenās hospital. But Iām 18 now, and since my primary care is through the childrenās hospital, itās becoming almost impossible to get any treatment for my ailments. The biggest hospital in the area is connected to a college, and I donāt attend that college nor do I have a pre-existing account there so they wonāt see me. Other, independent doctors keep saying that I canāt use a childrenās hospital referral to receive treatment through them. But Iām at childrenās because the trans clinic gives me the hormones that I need, so itās like Iām stuck in a loop. No one will answer me because my referral is from a childrenās hospital, but I have to be seen at the Childrenās hospital because they handle my gender care. Eugh.
458d
A doctor once instead my acid reflux was because I was pregnant. I was 15 a virgin and had a negative pregnancy test at the hospital. It turned out I had oesophagitis.
my providers are very supportive of me and my transition, but healthcare workers outside of my circle have deadnamed and misgendered me for years, even when both were changed in the system/on my profile, but it did lower after I started HRT and had surgery. the deadnaming stopped when I had my legal name and sex change (nobody could find my deadname), but my insurance still has me as female after two requests to change it because of legal documentation. either way, I feel lucky to have access to safe, gender affirming healthcare. everybody deserves this! some people just love to spread hate.
@teiovex I also have a bad experience with insurance. I was 19 when I started HRT, and as soon as I go the prescription they called my parents to āconfirm this is correctā despite the fact that they had never done this with any other medications or treatments. So right as I walked out of the doctors office, after confirming about doctor patient confidentiality, I got an angry phone call from my parents that I was totally not ready for where I found out I had been outed by insurance.
460d
I had to spend a whole appointment with my new psychiatrist explaining non-binary identities, and he refused to accept asexuality as a valid reason I won't conceive then essentially forced me onto contraception otherwise he'd take me off my mood stabiliser š
@Eeeds the medication threat feels illegal
Well being in the closet means I can't face any homophobia/transphobia. Still it stings to be called by my birth name and she/her pronouns.
Iām a nonbinary trans man on HRT. I have a heck of a time finding doctors who know how to treat me, because most have zero knowledge of how HRT or chest binding works. One panicked about my (safe) chest binder. Another had to Google answers in front of me about LGBT safer sex practices. Iāve been deadnamed and maāamed left and right, despite having a tenor voice and a beard. Iām terrified how they would handle things if my life were on the line, and not just a routine check up.
Most male doctors prefer to speak with my husband over me.
462d
I have a connective tissue disorder and my joints dislocate, I was told for years that if I would sit normally like a girl should that my knees wouldnāt come out anymore. This was false information BTW, I was manspreading.
@Knees yikes
463d
I told them several times Iām having issues with my bladder and pain in my area with tampons or anything else and they said āwell that just happens sometimes as a womanā turns out my uterous is deformed to the point itās messing up my general anatomy down there and pushing on my bladder and such and thatās why Iām having problems
@SomeKindaKid I also peed the bed until I was 10 because I have so many issues and drs didnāt care even though my mom kept bringing it up to them. Same issue Iām having now I just wake up in pain several times a night because I have to pee so bad
iām an indigenous (cisgender)woman, and thereās no denying that misogyny and racism is prevalent in the medical field. any time i bring up pain, it always gets shot down. itās a huge stereotype that all natives are desperate drug addicts, looking for new narcotic prescriptions and medical professionals definitely take it as fact. iāve been dealing with chronic pain thatās only been progressing, and i finally got a doctor to listen to me. she was another woman. if i am able to, iām definitely going to be requesting bipoc women to be my pcp for the rest of my life.

464d
š„ Negatively. I hate getting pap smears.
Being on testosterone caused vaginal atrophy and Ive had an awful experience with an ultrasound tech misgendering me and telling me that I shouldn't be in pain during an internal ultrasound... I was nearly crying in pain and having a PTSD flashback. At the same obgyn office the Dr who also treats my mom gave me a lecture about listening to my mom (who's transphobic) and misgendered me the entire appointment. I pass, and even the non passing trans ppl shouldn't be misgendered either, I haven't been misgendered other than by family in over a year, and I told her my pronouns and that I'm on T, so it's not like she was making an innocent mistake
i used to have a lot of anxiety about going to the doctor because i'm trans. especially when i was a teenager cause my transphobic parents chose my doctors. i'm a lot better about it now and don't delay seeking care anymore, but that's all due to me thankfully living in a relatively trans friendly city. getting trans healthcare is still a nightmare in most places
My gender hasn't really affected anything. I get treated with respect. And even though I'm having a baby right now my pronouns are respected as they/them and they call me by my different name and refrain from my birth one. I haven't been treated a bad different. When I was in the mental hospital they have me my own room because I identified differently. And they made sure I was comfortable and corrected others on my name too. I haven't really had a bad experience.
I always have to choose between healthcare providers that know about gender stuff and will use my pronouns correctly, and ones that can actually help me. Often I end up with neither, or both but they won't communicate with each other.
465d
As a trans person, it's pretty much a nightmare. My pcp is amazing, totally cool and understanding, but trying to find a gyno that's comfortable with me or trying to get a therapist that doesnt try to connect my gid with everything is the worst. Gods forbid I have to find another pcp...
476d
Fortunately for me, very little. However, I have been screened for EDās basically every time Iāve been hospitalised because I am a female on the thinner sideā Iāve never struggled with eating or weight or EDās. I know that if I was a male with the same BMI, this would be overlooked. That said, it is worse for men that they somehow have to be āmore unhealthyā for anyone to raise suspicions of an ED.
478d
It took me 16 YEARS to get diagnosed with fibromyalgia. All the doctors kept brushing me off and telling me that nothing was wrong, etc etc.
@The_Pained_Dinosaur That happened to my mom, the doctor just assumed my mom was after drugs and literally told her to go home and have a glass of wine.
485d
Yes! They refused a lifesaving surgery because they thought it was "gender affirming surgery" because it was a reconstructive bottom surgery. It wasn't to do with my gender at all but that's what they labeled it as and refused. Had to move to get care
itās always āmy periodā or ā attention seekingā no it isnāt iām struggling it shouldnāt matter how i identity, do your job and help me.
47d
@MooMin I will never understand why that's most doctors conculsion it is beyond frustrating
Besides the confusion around pronouns, where each medical professional in a room might be referring to me by something different š... Many ER visits where treatment for a completely unrelated known condition was significantly delayed because they "have" to test for pregnancy "for all women" even though I'm not a woman, and had 0 chance of being pregnant. Wasting time to comment on the status of the reproductive system on scans when the diagnosis is entirely unrelated to it. It happens even now that I don't have those parts anymore. Though, since transitioning, I find I'm taken much more seriously presenting as a masculine human.
Iāve had doctors not willing to prescribe meds that could harm a pregnancy because Iām āstill of childbearing age.ā Iāve been clear about not wanting to have children for almost 15 years now
@KayCeeBee that is ridiculous they should listen to you and not worry about if you can still bear a kid
Yes, nobody ever believes me, it is exhausting trying to get diagnosed with anything as a woman. It happened to my mum too the doctor told her she was having panic attacks watched her have one in the room with him and then it turned out she was actually having hundreds of mini heart attacks for months and literally couldāve died like I left her while she was having one once because we got in a fight in town (she was abusive my whole life) she started having one and I couldnāt deal with it because sheās usually very manipulative so thought it was that and I genuinely left my mother in town while I walked home and she was a having a heart attack
it hasn't cos i haven't come out to my healthcare providers šæ
@Gaz I could understand why it is scary in this society
486d
āyour hormones are just shifting, they do that a lotā
@kk062001 that's what they thought in the beginning with me and it turns out the blood tests were normal so frustrating
Yes.
487d
I'm constantly treated as 'less than.' I think the only thing saving me is my husband coming to my appointments with me.
64d
@royalty I'm so sorry
I'm constantly misdiagnosed (both physically and mentally) by male doctors and it's put me in the hospital before and nearly killed me with conflicting meds before
@bellacourse that is terrible I'm so sorry you had to go through that
"Ur probably just on ur period"
@lilcrustymusty yep
I went to the doctors to get my physical done about 2-3 months ago, that day I decided to wear some biker shorts and a tank top that was covered by a jacket. My mom decided that it was too inappropriate to go to the doctors like that and said "you will not go out with me like this" , so I decided I wasn't gonna go out , but she was nagging me about it for the next 30 minutes until she finally agreed. I feel very sexualized by someone I once trusted so much. I could go on with all the times she's hurt me.
491d
I've had a gynecologist repeatedly misgender me, and my mom had called beforehand and told her that I'm not actually trans (my mom is transphobic) and so instead of listening to my concern she lectured me about listening to my family and respecting my mother. I'm 19, so there's no excuse for that conversation at all. And then at the same place the ultrasound tech was nasty and dismissive when I was nearly crying from pain during an internal ultrasound.
Not at all
492d
Not at all. They don't ask, I don't share. My sex however means I get labelled hysterical though lol
I say, itās time to get some new medical opinion.
Doctors donāt believe women, especially young ones. That made it take a long time to get diagnosed, and I was told harmful things by the doctors before they finally figured it out
@Student_girl agreed. My mother began developing breast cancer at age 14. She started feeling a lump, and after some months developed symptoms of illness like low energy, persistent colds etc. She went to the doctor and she was repeatedly dismissed with āpubertyā¦breast growth is normalā. Real concerns are dismissed. She grew thinner and weaker until one day when she was 15 she collapsed at school. She is tall, 1/2 inch under 6ft and on her diagnosis intake that day weighed 96 lbs. Insane!! I canāt imagine how different her life might have been if that first doctor had taken her seriously. Beyond that, imagine if young women had trust that they would be taken seriously, she probably would have reported to the doctor even earlier, right at the onset.
493d
In a few ways it's been good, because when I was hospitalised I was put on a mens ward which gave me a lot of euphoria and a lot of doctors treat me as a cis man, but soon after I came out and starting trying to get help for my chronic illnesses, my records were being changed and it caused a lot of confusion and stress when I was in hospital or having doctors appointments. Starting testosterone and having my GP prescribe it at first was a rough time, an Indian doctor said he "wasnt comfortable prescribing it" so I had to ask another doctor. He also would act like I was exaggerating mys symptoms and essentially would run me about over the littlest of things and would not take me seriously.
Just being misgendered, it's not that big a deal for me
22d
@Lkbmotion I mean it must get annoying sometimes
496d
I once had a doctor tell me that having very irregular periods wouldn't affect me when I'm trying to get pregnant (before I was diagnosed with pcos) I literally had explain to him how periods and ovulation work
498d
I've had doctors tell me that I'm not my preferred pronouns and then misdiagnosed my mental disorders due to it.
I've found that being a female, things aren't taken as seriously. It's almost as if I'm treated like I'm back many years ago and it just plain old female hysteria acting up. My mum was treated the same and almost died a few years ago on Christmas eve from sepsis because they thought she was overreacting with the pain she was in from a surgery they performed and caused the issue.
@BloopSchmoogles I'm so so sorry
Being nonbindary, it feels like everyone is trying to be extra careful and give me special treatment. It's incredibly frustrating becasue I just want normal advice and not sugar-coated advice
30d
@Embers I'm so sorry
499d
It's frustrating.
38d
@Something_Strange I can imagine
503d
i haven't gotten the money to change my name legally so every time i hear The Dreaded G Word in a medical setting i understand but i still cringe super hard internally
513d
When you go to the ER for a herniated disc pressed on a nerve and they say you just have anxiety š
@lollygage that's not ok at all
@lollygage that's ridiculous
514d
I had a doctor laugh in my face when I came with concerns of a miscarriage. She told me I did have one and opened the door for me to leave. I asked her to wait and explain to me what I do now, if I need any meds or a second check up.any treatments or pain meds. Any kind of information I tried to ask her for she laughed and told me she refuses to do anything for me and to leave. I left there completely humiliated, crying my eyes out and angry. I had just been given devestating news and was kicked out the door.
@Satans_lil_devil I'm so so sorry
I trans (ftm) and itās always been an awkward subject with my doctors. They would always try to blame my issues on my period, and then never do anything about it except suggest birth control. I had a complete hysterectomy as well and Iām still getting asked about my period as if thatās the source of everything!!! Itās extremely frustrating and dysphoria inducing. Itās in my chart so you definitely donāt have to ask about it as if itās still an ongoing problem. Iām down for talking about it with good reason, but there usually isnāt one with the providers Iāve seen. Definitely have had some good interactions with nurses though. If anyone wants to chat about anything gender or general lgbt+ related Iām definitely open for that though.
515d
My Healthcare providers do not know I'm nonbinary, and I'm hesitant to tell them because I'm worried they'll just be dismissive about it
@rip_ash that's understandable
My severe endometriosis was dismissed over a dozen times in the emergency room as āa mixture of anxiety and bad period crampsā meanwhile my intestines were literally tied in knots because of my condition. Made it so I didnāt get a good doc or diagnosis for over a year of sever pain, losing 40 pounds unintentionally, and being on a liquid diet because I couldnāt digest food. Lol
@Spooxk I'm so sorry
I was told as a teenager that āall girls feel that way, youāre just emotionalā when I complained of dizziness and near syncopal episodes. IT WAS ACTUALLY A SERIOUS HEART RATE AND BLOOD PRESSURE DISORDER that is a chronic condition. But it took years for them to actually test me. Doctors dismiss women 9/10 times it feels like and thats one of the reasons women with chronic illness end up so traumatized and tired imo
I feel like. With being a woman, most male doctors won't listen to me and just want to prescribe me meds and send me on my way.
@Jewelicorn I feel that
I'm genderqueer and would love to go on hormone therapy but can't because it would make me have more seizures and now I'm stuck sounding like a girlš sometimes this body sucks
@f_Felixx_x I'm so sorry
516d
In the beginning, my mental illness was always dismissed as hormones by my family and most adults (born female). And my mental health issues started at 8 years old but I only started to try to get help at around 11 (I had my period at 9 didn't get normal until 10). I frequently couldn't decide if I wanted to keep faking who I was or not and my family pushed this off as mood swings from my menstraul stuff. Basically I had way more years than I should have for my mental illness to get worse and worse.
517d
Iām slowly coming out to doctors. Thankfully they donāt care about me being trans.
@Nicoratboy I'm glad
I feel like I'm not taken seriously in-person by many older, male doctors when I say that I'm in pain
@Kittypop I'm so so sorry
527d
I feel like in general, but especially as a woman due to the unrealistic standards surrounding our weight/bodies, there is so much healthcare fatphobia. I'm not considered obese (slightly overweight more or less) but I have been misdiagnosed on more than one occasion because my conditions have been passed off as just being overweight when in reality the conditions were causing me to gain weight.
@JJ_W it's so true unfortunately
528d
My gender and race causes me not be a priority. Iām an American and Iāve been seen by drs and professionals in the city I was born in but bc Iām not melanin deficient, Iām over looked a lot.
@MysticFairyFae I'm so so sorry
I feel like doctors dismiss my problems often, or think I'm being dramatic. Then when there's an obvious problem they can't deny, they are like "oh, you should have been in earlier" and it's stuff where other people wouldn't handle the level of distress and would come in sooner? For example- I had TSS and was very close to sepsis bc of a new IUD placement and my uterus and right ovary were apparently very swollen and infected, they told me I might even not be fertile afterwards? I thought the pain was gas and the rest of the symptoms were just me not feeling as was to be expected from the new IUD. But with my chronic pain they think I'm exaggerating. Which I don't even get- I'm not even drug seeking. The military used to put me on opiates and I hated them and didn't take them as often or the full dose they said- and argued with my doctors to get off them. Or how I was miserable w ulcers, and the doctor didn't believe me until they did an upper and lower GI scope.
@OurLadyOfChaos Oh! And if I was a boy they def would have caught my ADHD in the 90s. But instead I was too talkative, messy, disrespectful/ defiant, and scatterbrained.
529d
I'm transmasc in the deep south. I'm always dismissed. Having mental health issues hasn't helped. I'm treated like I don't know shit, even about my own body and health.
@AspenJay I'm so sorry
530d
I'm a demiboy. Been going to the same doctor since my eldest brother was a toddler. He knows me a girl. It's- It's so weird to explain to new doctors that "Hey, I'm a guy with lady bits."
@WilburEffingSoot My work around is "I'm a man. I just happen to also have been assigned female at birth."
@WilburEffingSoot this!!!!
536d
I'm actually Apagender and so many people give me a weird look when I say that but it's a thing! When I tell people I don't have time to be caring about gender right now they're always like, oh so agender right? Heh, no. Two very different things. Agenders use It / It's , I use any pronouns. I've had so many people call me a man, so many people call me a woman, and others can't tell. So I gave up on gender.
541d
Went to the mental hospital. Got misgendered and dead named a total of 24 times by one of the staff members. They had been briefed. It was on my chart. One lady even gave me a second wristband and wrote my preferred name on it for me to help me not be dysphoric. Then ONE staff member effectively increases my stay from 3 days to a week and a half stay at a place where 5 day stays are rare to never. š
552d
Being a gay woman, I would say definitely. The amount of gaslighting and dismissal Iāve faced is absurd. Everything is written off as anxiety, or itās ignored and goes uncharted in my medical files. The only diagnosis in my medical chart is anxiety and depression (which was diagnosed when I was 11) and Iāve developed 7 chronic illnesses since then that arenāt documented in my chartā¦
I almost died of sepsis because of medical neglect because I dress more gender fluid. So yes.
Single male, no dependants. I don't get healthcare. I just suffer, and try my best not to hate the people that don't have to.
550d
@Swerve I feel like your demographic gets the short straw a lot, and I don't understand why. You're still a person with healthcare needs. What does your lack of attachment or dependants have to do with it? Ya know?
578d
all my female therapists were awful, i recently got my first male therapist, and after all these years i feel like i finally have a real therapist. lol
I never knew they knew your sexual preference? Iām also bisexual but I never had to tell anyone my preference although I live in a small town. I did had some weird doctors tho
579d
medical transphobia is super bad, and iām frequently disregarded by medical professionals + i feel uncomfy seeking sexed treatment. also many of my conditions are under researched in AFABs and women or are under researched in general bc theyāre more common in AFABs & women
the weird thing is male doctors have been the only ones to get me treated and make my pain manageable
48d
@kk062001 interesting
@kk062001 me too
iām a woman. I identify as a woman. I was born female. iāll go to the doctor and often times theyāll tell me itās just anxiety, or my time of the month is coming. itās been 8 years of this.. I just got diagnosed w lupus and fibromyalgia ab 4 months ago. my doctor said my fibro wouldāve been manageable if they had addressed it sooner.
40d
@kk062001 I'm so so sorry
I started hrt and anti depressants with in a month of each other. It's a weird experience because of the major hormone changes and cycles. Not a bad change just weird.
It took 25 years for me to be diagnosed with ADHD because it looks so different in females. I wish someone had paid attention to it when I was younger.
@Vannah349 I felt this I'm so sorry
582d
p sure if I was a 13 year old boy concerned that I have autism I'd get a better response than "no... you have friends? then you're not autistic"
@AriEden that must be so frustrating
584d
Well since I'm a female they think they can control me more.
@keekso234 I'm so sorry that you have that experience
Iām nonbinary, AFAB, and I have endometriosis. Though a diagnosis by 19 and my first laparoscopy are 25 are far from the worst Iāve cases Iāve heard of, my pain was dismissed. The first treatment I got when the symptoms really started sinking their teeth into me- not birth control. Hydrocodone. For a 16 y/o. I donāt feel like that needs further explanation. I wasnāt diagnosed with ADHD until this year, at 29. The symptoms have been present since childhood, and a lot of my childhood trauma involves being abused for showing them. Same wrt being autistic- no doc diagnosis yet but literally every single āweirdā thing is now explained. Even things I didnāt know were problems. I was also hospitalized for s/icidal ideation when I was 13- the treatment I got was inadequate and I didnāt have any therapy or even saw someone qualified to do pediatric psychiatry/psychology. š My lovely sperm donor later said my depression was ājust hormonesā and ājust a phase,ā despite his father and all four of his siblings having it. Admittedly a lot of stuff for me has to do with childhood abuse but NONE of the doctors involved in my treatment as a minor really gave a shit about me š© So so relieved to be in charge of my own care.
As a 30yo female, I feel like my ASD was missed as a child simply because I am female. I haven't been officially diagnosed yet, but I score high on screenings. Hoping to find a specialist soon
@Lin92 that must be so frustrating
Dude doctors especially are just super dismissive and make me feel unsafe, but I am constantly terrified by the medical system and how disabled women are treated. It's even worse for other marginalized groups which is horrifying. I've been constantly told that my chronic illness is only related to anxiety, when there were things really wrong with me. Also, pain is seldom taken seriously enough, which I noticed at the gyno for sure. My nurse was amazing but nothing could have prepared me for how traumatic getting an IUD in is. It should fr be required to do local anesthesia, the pain is completely unbearable and I almost passed out and threw upšit just feels like we're expected to endure so much pain and put up with so much shit in processes that should be safe and simple.

I had a stroke last year. Until my PCP (God rest his Soul. He died back in March) spoke up, people were not taking me seriously. Now after years of numbness and issues with my memory. So forth and so on. I'm finally being tested for MS.
@amandasnyder588 that's got to be difficult
Went into the ER actively on my death bed with pancreatitisā¦ the first doctor I saw didnāt do a physical exam on me, instead he said āconsidering your symptoms itās most likely just gastritis. Weāll still run a few tests but weāll get you out of hereā like no sir you walked in on me sobbing in pain, maybe you can actually look at me before diagnosing me.

Being AFAB I'm never taken seriously and everything gets blamed on my reproductive system or weight. But now that I'm out as nonbinary? The transphobia is really bad. It can be really dangerous when receiving care.
@Neuco I'm so sorry
No one takes me seriously. šš»āāļø Iām a young woman so obviously my pain is all in my head. Even in labor when I arrived at the hospital the nurses told me they were going to send me home because I obviously wasnāt in actual labor cause I was still smiling (all before they checked me)ā¦ I was 8cm and didnāt even have time for them to start an IV before my baby was born! When I was 13 years old I went on family vacation to an island where we went zip lining together. I came back from vacation and started having a ton of pain, blisters, and swelling on my hand. I went to the doctor and she misdiagnosed me with herpes, regardless of me informing her I wasnāt sexually active. This was really hurtful to me as I was so young and didnāt know much about stdās, but I just believed the doctor. My dad was enraged and took me to a different doctor and they informed me it was poison sumac and gave me a steroid shot. It was never an STD at all and it was really odd to me that a doctor would diagnose someone with herpes when theyāre hand is swelling up. Ridiculous. Very damaging for a young girl.
It seems being a woman, having chronic pelvic pain, and having no reproductive organs due to cancer means I'm nuts or drug seeking. šš

i'm not out to any of my doctors, but i've definitely had tests and diagnoses refused for being young and AFAB. a rheumatologist told me to just exercise and stretch and my "fibromyalgia-like symptoms" (her words, not mine) would go away. i'm very active and it's been four years. the symptoms have only gotten worse and still no diagnosis. fun times

I went to the er in December, ended up going back the same day. Cheif complaint was horrible stomach pains, like doubled over. They did a pregnancy test even though I have an IUD and when that was negative the doctor says "well maybe its just PMS". Ok I have PMDD so my cramps get bad, but I don't get periods because of the IUD and I know what menstrual cramps feel like. He called it gastritis and sent me on my way. When I came back about 7 hours later I was bleeding a ton, enough that the bleeding alone made me go back. The FEMALE doctor said maybe it was just my period. I'm like I know where the blood is coming from and thats not it. She insisted on doing a rectal exam to confirm that that was in fact the source of the blood š. Of course, that triggered a lovely flashback because I have PTSD as a result of sexual assault when I was 16 so certain things trigger me. They finally did a colonoscopy the next morning and determined it was colitis. I literally had internal inflammation (which is apparently chronic) and they tried to brush it off as my period.
When I went to the doctor for double vision and half of my body being numb, I was told I just needed to lose weight and it'll go away. It turned out to be MS. I've since lost 100 pounds and I most definitely still have MS...
@NelCat I'm so sorry
One time I was rushed to the ER because of anaphylactic shock. The doctor looked at my health history and was like "ah, it's just a panic attack, you're fine." No buddy, I didnt start panicking until AFTER I stopped breathing. And my panic attacks dont involve my lips swelling up. Thankfully he gave me the meds anyways because I was covered head to toe in hives. I'm pretty sure if I was a man he would have taken me more seriously instead of dismissing it as me being emotional.
@Mop I'm so so sorry

Not me but my husband. Idk how many times I've went with him and him explain what's wrong and a female doctor acts like just because he's a man, he doesn't understand medical terms, his body, etc. I've had to step in a time or 2 and remind them that he is perfectly capable of understanding everything.
That is absolutely ridiculous that you would have to contact the corporate office to have them change it from F to M. Next time ask them if you also need to contact them when you change your address or phone number becaue they make sure all that info is correct when checking in.....sounds like either the ones that check people in have a problem with that or the corporate office needs to update thier system so that kind of info can be corrected when necessary. They may want to throw in a little extra training while they are at it. So im curious did you actually contact the corporate office?? And did they fix that yet?? What some people deem is not important or "minut" can be very important to someone else. When and who im this world decided that it's ok to be rude to others.....unfortunately nowadays it run rampid. I'm dying to know If they fixed that!!

Currently, me being afab has lead to me being constantly disrespected as a man. Since I am 20 years old, no doctor thinks I can have the issues I have. The only reason why I have been able to get any care at all is because of the people in my life you stand up for me. Without them, I would probably be in an ER as a Jane Doe (Should be John, but you know how transphobic hospitals are.) On a ventilator. No ER doctors are able to help me and I am in constant pain. I'm told to excersize more and not be "so lazy", but that's practically impossible since working out (normal regime, not physical therapy) means my body breaks down more. I know *being* a man is supposedly going to give you more power, but it really doesn't when everyone around you sees your as a woman and then degrades you for speaking up for yourself because of wrongful assumptions and disrespect.

Iām 57 yrs old with intestinal issues since birth. Iāve had good DRS and bad. My latest and greatest is the VA health system and they havenāt let me down yet. Notably my last gastro tried to kill me with fiber. So glad I switched DRS. After my last surgery I complained because the surgery caused a āpoochā in my upper stomach. He put his hand on my stomach and said it was just fat ! Not that he had caused 3 separate infections and my stomach Bulged or anything š. He had the nerve to tell me he does gastric bypass and I should look into it. I only weighed 174 and had just undergone surgery for a bowel obstruction!
@Daretta I am so sorry. That is absolutely awful. They should be believeing you when you say something is wrong.
Ain't easy bein transgender and potentially having cysts on ur ovaries lmfao I mean I like the lack of periods but the medication options I heard would increase estrogen and shit and I don't want that
@dragonscale It also doesn't help everyone. I was on progesterone and it actually made it worse. Any birth control I took made the pain and my periods worse. When I finally got everything removed (gender Dysphoria), they looked at the cysts lining my ovaries and tubes and said nothing was abnormal. Turns out, my liver and spleen have those same cysts and I am still suffering because they didn't want to believe anything was wrong with my body.
I had a dr during my SSI appeal hearing that was supposed to discuss my epilepsy, but all this douche bag would talk about was my weight (I'm 4'11" and 150lbs, which my PCP is fine with). It got to the point that the judge (bless that woman) cut him off and told that my weight is not what we're discussing. My brain is.

I had stage 4 endometriosis and nobody would believe me from the time I was 18 until I was 24. I was told the pain I experienced were normal period cramps even though I couldn't stand up straight or leave my bed most days. I would have a cycle for months at a time and doctors continued to tell me it was normal for years until I found a great doctor who also was a woman and listened to me
@SunBunny I am so glad you found someone who listened to you. Endometriosis is life threatening. I hate when doctor's don't listen to us when we say we have something wrong with us. Constant extreme pain is not normal.
Not just doctors but I have such bad periods I cant work at my job sometimes from pain, the amount of blood, nausea, dizziness, period poops, over heating, etc etc. No one really believes me when I say the pain is so bad I'd rather have my uterus surgically removed with no anesthesia. I was just given basic birth control which admittedly has helped but I still feel like people think I'm exaggerating.

I was by my pass doctor for years. When I would yell her how bad I hurt and the stiffness I could afford another doctor so I had to endure her incompetence. Now my ra has attacked my š« and taken over 50% capacity, on home oxygen it socks. Our medicl world need to get better
Sorry you had to deal with such incompetence! So frustrating.
I can't count the amount of times I've been reading medical information and it's split into men and women. I'm a trans man and aside from the misgendering I'd get from being lumped in with the women category, I don't even really belong there. I have been on testosterone for 3 years now and I do not have the same biology as a cis woman and treating like I am just because of what the doctor said when I was born doesn't just make me feel bad it makes medical information very unhelpful. I have never seen an article break down where the difference in male vs female symptoms come from so I'm just left to guess at which ones I need to read because I have the hormones of a cis man and the anatomy of a cis woman

Absolutely unacceptable. I did complain but ended up finding a new doctor when I was told "oh wow, really? Everyone just LOVES him". Yeah, a little research and I realized the only patients who "loved him" were all men. I had shown up with my wife at the time. (I'm a lesbian) and he was visibly uncomfortable. Sad.

As a young female with a strong educational background in Biology, I have the privilege of being able to read a lot of the scientific literature about my condition, but I am always dismissed when I try to bring up things I have read about. Automatically by being a girl, getting an ADHD and Autism diagnosis was hell. It took pretty much my whole elementary school board involved to get my diagnosis for both. But all throughout my life my disabilities have been downplayed by my gender. I was told I was too smart to be ADHD-Autistic, I was just sensitive, spoiled, lazy. Most of which were told to me by doctors and psychiatrists. In fact I heard it so much growing up I started to believe that I faked my symptoms for attention (even though I definitely didnāt). And even now all of that has effected me to this day. Sometimes I still downplay my own emotions because I was never properly taught how to deal with the way I feel and the way my disabilities effect me specifically. And whatās so upsetting to me is that so many young girls and women go without a diagnosis their whole life because of the way girls are perceived mentally. I was so lucky to get my diagnoses as early as I did, but not many others are as lucky. And even with my diagnoses, I never received proper treatment
16

@Graciemaye This! That's how I was perceived by doctors and family. Especially when I had autistic meltdowns. I still am not diagnosed with anything. My family didn't take it seriously, and I just now found a good doctor for the first time but am broke. I'm trying to get Medicaid. It's a process.
@Llynciani And you're right. I feel so much for the people who have experienced this as well.

As a nonbinary, my pronouns are often dismissed because I don't "look" enby. And they are more focused on everything else, rather than making me comfortable by using they/them pronouns when I ask them to. I kind of understand because my health issues should be the focus, but it certainly doesn't help with the dysphoria
10
@TheDreamingKind I'm sorry to hear that
š„š„omg these are horrible experiences and sadly Healthcare has become a $$ business now, there is almost none sympathy for the patient, no humanity.
Is it wrong to suggest that, perhaps, the issue is not as much "gender-biased" doctors as it is simply "doctors still to this day do not currently receive enough healthcare training and information regarding both atypical and female biology and functions to properly treat female patients, or patients with atypical presentations, with the proper level of scrutiny and skepticism as to run enough tangible tests to be as absolutely certain of the extant concern as contemporarily possible"?
I mean š that's not what I was getting at. Mistreatment of patients by doctors is a very large, widespread issue as evidenced by this public forum alone. My point was that structuring the question to focus on gender when nearly every reply is coming from an AFAB woman means this question could have been phrased "How has your healthcare experience been in relation to personal treatment by your doctor?" or "How does your doctor treat your self-reported symptoms?" and literally no part of any answer would have to change to still be a valid, sensical answer to the question as posed. āPerfection is Achieved Not When There Is Nothing More to Add, But When There Is Nothing Left to Take Awayā āAntoine de Saint-Exupery This question as posed is far from perfect.
Also notable: The way basically everyone in here is just saying "because I'm female" without any supporting evidence whatsoever to the statement just goes to show that biases lean both ways, and walking into an office assuming they're going to mistreat you for being afab just because you carry some misandrist chip on your shoulder means you're probably getting mistreated for being an asshole, not for having a uterus. The way you carry yourself and the way that you state what you think you already know for fact to a professional you're requesting the opinion of affects everything; I'm willing to bet a lot of you when in there hot-headed making statements of fact as if from vouched authority. Your experience is not "vouched authority" to a trained professional who is not privy to literally any of your past experience, nor where you derived your sincere belief that your assumption is correct information. I haven't had a single new clinic actually retrieve my old records in my life. Has anyone here? Anyone that isnt suffering from some near-fatal affliction which absolutely requires the most expensive collaborative healthcare teams or ongoing re-analysis of an acute issue? I take this to assume that every doctor treating a new patient who walks in stating that they already know their scenario is going to treat the entire interaction with a grain of salt and try to reevaluate everything for themselves. Some people are *actually* incorrectly convinced of something, and will continue to seek new clinics until they receive the diagnosis they want rather than the one that's true. It's a thing. Everything isnt about freaking gender, this attitude is going off the deep end.
@SAMHAIN your mom doesn't love you
SO FROM WHAT WE'RE GATHERING HERE: ALL doctors in the United States are treating all patients like absolute shit that is alao brain-dead and watching too much WebMD TV. Good. Good we have a consensua that our medical industry is complete garbage and literally 100% of the doctors are actualky bigoted pieces of trash that stopped reading science literature when it stopped being required of them to pass an exam that would lead them to six. figures Glad my experience as an AMAB autistic aligns with everyone else's regardless of genderābecause this confirma my suspicion that nothing negative happening in a healthcare facility has anything to do with gender bias anywhere NEAR as much as "learnĆ©d professional vs. some simpleton idiot civilian" bias. Good talk. š Let's remember what's important and quit drawing fkng lines in the sand, @App Devs šš¤¬

I definitely think being a young femme presenting person has made it so that my symptoms are often minimized and brushed aside as not being as serious as they truly are.

Being female and especially being so young, I am often dismissed especially when it comes to pain. I have to remind myself that the pain scale for me is different and that I live at a baseline of 3-5. My migraines to me are a 6-8 but I have to say 10 for them to believe me and give me medication. I have atypical migraines so I have to go to the ER often for injections. Being knowledgeable about what you need and advocating for yourself is often translated as ādrug seeking.ā
18
@Solar_Eclipse I've had SO MANY Drs treat me as drug seeking simply because I'm resistant to most "first line" meds.
Yes! My dad and I were going through very similar pain and spine issues at the same time. The difference in care was insane, it took me over 6 months for a doctor to even offer me an MRI, and then it took months to get all the procedures and injections I needed. My dad had an MRI, a large array of pain medications, and procedure within a week.

I am female. Pediatrician I had as a kid was horrible. At one point, I was having 15 to 20 panic attacks per day and he told me "it's not that big of a deal" my mom said that he was very condescending towards her as well. My dad and younger brother thought he was great. I also went to a female psychiatrist once. I had a really bad reaction to Paxil. It made me very suicidal. She wanted to put me on sertaline. I went to the pharmacy to fill it and the pharmacist (who I had been dealing with for many years) said that he saw I had an intolerance to Paxil. He asked what kind of reaction I had to Paxil. When I told him, he warned me to be careful with the Paxil. I have health OCD and starting a new medication is hard for me. But I didn't know I had OCD. I got really freaked out and refused the prescription. The psychiatrist became very condescending and refused to prescribe me something else, even though I explained the situation and requested a different med. Never went back.
@Lms526 my med nurse kept me on paxil for a year even though for months it made me so loopy and dizzy out of it that all i could do was sit and watch tv. i couldnt remember anything and lost a lot of memories of the past few years. then i got a new dr and she said i didnt have any side effects because i read the side effects and its in my head š i had every side effect. switched to sertraline and they went away like that

Being a young woman with a history of anxiety makes for a terrible experience with doctors. I once went to the hospital because my heartbeat was super irregular, and I had pain in my chest. The Dr came in and outright told me that it was just anxiety (without even glancing at my HR monitor screen, which CLEARLY showed irregularities that were accompanied with pain in my chest). I kept looking at him and back at the monitor while he explained anxiety to me (which, btw, I had already told the staff that I have a history of anxiety, so I already knew very well what anxiety is), and the man had the audacity to say, "why do you keep looking at the screen?" And right after he said it, he saw that my hr was funky and ordered an EKG. I got referred to a cardiologist (who actually listened to me with respect) & am now on meds.

@Mysteria are you sure you were dismissed by your sexuality? 5 days or less is actually needed for certain bacteria to build up to show up on some tests. I'm sorry, but it sounds like you're not ok with your own sexuality...and being a female bisexual does make a difference when it comes to certain stds simply because certain things can simply only be transferred from male to female and some only vs vr, but not all, and its more unlikely for a straight person to get same gender infections unless they've been with another person of same gender. Just please, don't automatically assume all doctors act on their personal beliefs as they were sworn in to protect a life. Give it benefit of a doubt a bit on that one.
@Mashka You can be better!! Believe in yourself! I'll believe in you for you if need be.
@Mashka they could have tested for both conditions at the same time. There is no excuse for that.
@Mashka dude iām gonna let you know this comes off incredibly insensitive. regardless of my own sexuality and gender identity, i rarely have had a good experience w any doctor. youāre right ab them being āsworn in to protect a lifeā but to me it seems the workforce is more interested in the paycheck. most doctors iāve met have terrible bedside manner and come across as condescending.
@Mashka This comment was very hateful and close minded. I think you have to educate yourself on what bisexuality means and how it actually affected people's lives. It varies from person to person, but humans are not defined by our genetalia and inferring so shows *me* how little you understand your own sexuality... Let alone you judging others'.

@Mashka I have no issues with my sexuality, and Iām very comfortable in it. Thatās why I disclosed to the doctor that I was bisexual. I didnāt think it would make a difference but it made a huge difference.

@Mashka their first diagnosis was fever of unknown origin. They came into the room to ask me some questions, they asked about my sexual history- I explained that I am bisexual but in a monogamous relationship. It was only after I disclosed that I was bisexual that they started saying I had PED (pelvic inflammatory disease). PED is only caused by late stage chlamydia. I asked what made them come to that conclusion and they said it was because I was saying I had adominal pain. I then told the doctor that I also had a cough- and she looked me dead in the face and said āitās unrelated, you have an std.ā Even my mother- who is a nurse- was saying that the doctor was acting on their own personal biases- and it really did almost lead to my death as they wouldnāt treat my other symptoms until the std panel came back.

@Mysteria I've had doctors act weird because my chart says something about me being into both women and men. It really makes me wonder whether or not they're evil forces out there wishing bad upon a certain group of people.
@malimami I've been there and have had the same kind of reaction. I'm still not sure what my sexual preference has to do with my medical issues. š¤
@malimami youāre one of the forces making a difference in this!!! Iām so sorry this happened to you :/ it genuinely impacted me to read this. But please know you are already representing the change that should be happening within a few years ā¤ļø
