tw for embarrassing situations:does anyone else have a hard time with bathroom accidents? there are a lot of times that I don't realize I have to urinate until right before I am about to urinate on myself. it makes life so hard because I am scared I will not be able to go out and work or hang out with friends.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
I feel you on this. I definitely sometimes get too wrapped up in the things that I'm doing and don't realize how badly I have to pee until it's like oh god I need to go to the bathroom lol I know there's a lot of different strategies that people use though. For example setting an alarm at regular intervals
Like I know I can hold it really well because 1) I hate public restrooms big issue with those with my autism and 2) I work in schools so I'm not able to just leave class to go pee but sometimes it is so bad, mostly at home that I just don't feel it until I REALLY feel it. There have been countless times where I have had to wash clothes and stuff because of it and it is so embarrassing. I'm a grown person, not a toddler.
omfg when I worked in schools it was so bad! I'm now in an alternative education program and have a team of 4 staff with me, and other staff I can easily call for supervision. It's so much better in that regard
I feel you but also be gentle with yourself! It's not like you're doing it on purpose! And I'm sure you would never talk to your students that way / want them to talk to themselves
maybe set alarms for times you know you will be out of work?
I have IC so I have bathroom, just for a different reason. In all honesty, it’s not your fault it’s happening. I wear some extra protection in my pants in case I have an accident I can just change and continue my good time. You can live a quality of life with it, just have to find the right tips and tricks for you 🙂
This is a big problem for us, a lot of time we just don't notice when we need to go to the bathroom or we hold it cuz we're afraid if we go someone will get upset (thank you school system). So there are definitely times when we will go to the bathroom and notice that we have had peed a little and we are still trying to figure out a good method to help us besides just wearing a pad even when we're not on our period.
I have this problem at night when I'm in bed. Doesn't help that I have bad knees and have to take a flight of stairs down to the closest bathroom.
you are not alone. bathroom issues are common in autism. im 24 years old and I still struggle to go number 2 when I need to. I still have accidents regularly due to withholding. it's been lifelong and I understand how shameful it can feel
