Hello you lovely people! As someone with autism I have recently discovered that lactose has been triggering my IBS symptoms. With cheese and milk as some of my main safe foods, do any of you have any substitutes you reccomend? I'm mainly puzzled on the milk aspect, there's so many to choose from and I'm worried I'm going to spend a lot of money finding one I like. My main trigger is textures of foods and not taste so if you could drop in the comments your milk of choice and why you like it, I would be grateful :)

I personally think oat milk is the most similar to dairy, it's just a little creamier in flavor I guess? Cheese honestly might be hard since a lot of non-dairy cheeses have different textures, so it kind of depends on your preferences. In terms of brands Daiya is pretty similar not melted, but that and SO tend to be stickier when melted. My personal favorite is the Chao brand; I think it mimics real cheese the best. However I've also been vegan for a few years so my memories could be a bit off, unfortunately it is a bit trial and error finding what you like best but those 3 seem to be the easiest to come by and have the most variety. There are also homemade "cheese" recipes you can look up

I personally love Blue Diamond Almond Breeze sweetened vanilla. It's my favorite almond milk, but most sweetened ones do well in a pinch

If you like drinking coffee or teas go to Dunkin' or Starbucks or a local coffee shop and try milk alternatives that way so you're not spending a bunch of money on milk that's what I did until I found one that I liked and try to have a backup I know it's hard to do

Most replacement cheese is a bad texture for me, kinda plasticy. Hard cheeses are okay for me, soft cheese and milk are measured if I am having any. Usually light cheese every once and a while is okay, same with baked goods and such

Oat milk goes really hard. Tho the texture can be a bit off, so I reccomend getting a carton of thin, and thickened so you can make it a more milk consistency ā™”

Some cheese naturally doesn't have lactose you could start with checking to see if the type ur eating is lactose free

@mx.mistoffolees I think almond milk is p similar to normal skim milk just a bit weaker in taste but it might be different if ur used to whole milk

@mx.mistoffolees I am more used to whole milk, but I used to have skim all the time as a kid, thanks for your input :)
