I feel like I'm not getting anywhere with my therapist lately. I've been having to do a lot of virtual sessions since I moved an hour away, and I think that just doesn't work for me. I don't know how to tell him this, or how to find a new therapist closer to me

Sometimes it doesn't work out. I've been through a handful of therapists in my time. One stopped working out because I moved too, and telephone sessions didn't help me as much as face to face for the problems I had back then either. I told them this, and they actually recommended a handful of therapists closer to me for face to face appointments. Now it's the opposite, due to my health I've had to turn down therapy sessions that were only available face to face as I need virtual/telephone appointments. Therapy is for you, it's your time and your health, and if the situation isn't working for you then you're not going to become healthier in the areas you want to.

Don't be afraid to find a new therapist. Remember, you are technically hiring them. They should be a great fit for you personally, and things can change. It can be really hard starting the process over again but I promise it's worth it. I love my current therapist.

Have you considered telling your therapist you haven’t been finding the most recent sessions as helpful? If he was helpful for you previously, there might be something he can adjust or do differently. That said, if you feel he’s simply not a good fit for you, you can absolutely stop seeing him and try someone new. When I’m searching for a therapist, I always start with the psychology today therapist search—you can filter by zip code, insurance, gender, and countless other factors, to find whatever you’re looking for in a therapist.
