Hey.. how do you guys deal with parental disappointment, specifically with college degrees? For context I have a BA in Commercial Music because I want to be a video game composer. I've written two albums and two singles and my mom kinda has a deflated reaction to my music cuz she doesn't care for the genre, but will gush over her roommates music even though she constantly fights with him. She says I'm not using my degree but I've produced both of my albums. I'm probably rambling but it's frustrating.

Shoot I had a mom that I would get a C on a test and all she could do is say you can do better. Even if I got a B on an assignment. So since I had kids I have told them that as long as they don't get a f or d they won't be in trouble. I have turned it around to be more positive for them

hey! my sister graduated from undergrad this year and is in the process of getting her grad degree. she has a very normal and useful degree. and I am soooo proud of her. but after a really bad 3 years w my mental health I decided it was best I leave college and get a job. I went up to NY to spend time w my terminally i’ll grandpa, then came back to my home state and started working in healthcare just as a filler until I was 21 and could be a flight attendant. that filler job has become my passion. i’m getting my CNA and have gotten so many certifications and will eventually get my RN. I have never been prouder of myself. I am taking all this bad crap and making it better. my family still doesn’t acknowledge that it had to happen this way for it to happen. I had to go through all that stuff to find my passion. I honestly have gotten to the point (through a lot of therapy) that I don’t care. i’m proud of me and that’s all that matters. it’s my life, they won’t be around forever, but my whole life i’ll be around me.

@kk062001 to add to that, my sister isn’t even using her degree. she is working at her college as a dorm hall that’s over all the RA’s. I can tell she’s happy.. but I won myself back.. no one else did. I did that!

@SnowGhost it's hard to gain parents approval, bit don't let that deter you from doing something you love
