i think im realizing that im more comfortable talking online with people because in person im masking a whole lot more due to a fear of being judged, reprimanded and insulted. that happened a lot to me as a young kid, so i had to learn how to act like everyone else. so sometimes people will see me as closed off or like a robot. it can look like im fake on the surface if you meet me in person first, and thats only because i have to act a certain way so i wont be judged. autism sucks.

I feel like this today too. The past couple of days have been extra tough. It’s hard not being frustrated and hating yourself (or the way your brain is wired) sometimes ya know? And days like this are definitely high on the negative self talk for me. You’re definitely not alone in feeling like this, and finding it easier to communicate and feel accepted online. However I do agree with @_kindly.ci_ and think that the people who do stay around, are totally worth it! I also feel like it’s easier to make deeper friendships/relationships with other neurodivergent people! It’s easier to feel safer/secure and authentic with like-minded people. My bestie is ND and I’ve never felt so connected to anyone in my life before (even above fam) it’s hard but there are so many people out there that would love to get to know the real you! ❤️‍🩹

I also do prefer online to face to face. Although I agree with the first comment, being unmasked has led to me making much more authentic friendships- I will always prefer written correspondence- even at work I much prefer an email to a teams call. It also means I have a paper trail or what I’ve said and what other people have said.

autism has allowed me to connect so authentically with people that stick around, though I can be my true self! Trust me, it is worth at the people that I meant to stay will 💕

It's completely understandable that you feel more comfortable talking online with people because it allows you to avoid masking and the fear of being judged. Many individuals with autism experience similar challenges in social situations, and finding a safe space to communicate without judgment is important for personal well-being.
