Hey all, this is a long one. So I'm off to college in a few months and I'm really freaking out about the whole roommate situation. I can't handle the idea of living with a stranger especially with my anxiety. I use my room as a safe space to be alone and to decompress. being social is a chore for me and I relish the time I can get away from society. Sometimes locking myself in my room is the only thing keeping me from having a panic attack. I like to talk to myself a lot and I get really upset if my sleep is disrupted. I just don't know how I'll function if I don't have that safe space where I can let my guard down anymore and it's freaking me out. I'm trying to get my therapist to sign a form request accommodations for mental illness but I'm worried it won't be accepted. there's 2 girls (twins) I'm friends with who are going to the same college and I'm considering asking them to room in a triple with me but part of my anxiety disorder is the feeling that everyone secretly hates me and I'm scared they're gonna say no. We’re only school friends and don't really hang out outside of that but at least I am familiar with them and our parents are friendly. I don't know if they would be remotely interested at all or if it would even lessen my anxiety. I'm completely at a loss here and spiraling. I know I probably sound crazy, but that's what this app is for right? I'm really hoping some of you understand what I'm going through because everyone else I've talked to doesn't get it. Thank you to whoever takes the time to read all of this and any advice is greatly appreciated.

@tigershark98 thank you, that makes me feel a bit better to hear that the process went smoothly for you. In my research I've read a lot about how places don't take mental health very seriously. May I ask what college you went to?

In a lot of colleges, it is very easy & even common to get accommodations. At a lot of schools, many students have accommodations for mental health conditions. Your school may be one of these. Even if it is not that many students, it is likely that a few have already received accommodations for the same issues that you experience. I am pretty sure that as long as your forms are filled out correctly, they have to make accommodations. You may need to explain in writing, or in person, how your mental health conditions affect you & how the accommodations you are requesting would make you healthier & more successful at college. Especially with your therapist’s written support, I think it should go pretty smoothly. You may even be able to request a single room - with no roommate - either as an accommodation with no extra cost, or without an accommodation for a slightly higher price. A lot of colleges do something like this. You do not sound crazy. I have Social Anxiety (and other issues) I needed accommodations - including a single room - to function on campus. I understand the worry very much. In my experience, it was easier & less scary than I had thought

@Jazzyj1448 I went to the University of Northern Iowa. The staff was very kind to me. The students were another story… But the accommodations process was very easy & a very large percentage of students had them. Then again, UNI has the reputation of being: “Where all the nerds and retards go,” according to my sister. But I have heard of other schools being the same way with accomodations, of course some places may be a lot more difficult.
