Really interested to know how other people feel about accommodations that separate them from NT folks. I really, really want to go to this conference at work, but I know I can't mask for that long. Their idea of "reasonable accommodation" here is attending remotely, or maybe having a quiet room to get away to. While those things will help my stress levels, they also force me to miss out on a big part of the experience. I'd really rather have something that makes it safer for me NOT to mask so much, but I'm not even sure what that looks like. Some kind of, like, hidden disability primer, maybe? Like a five or ten minute "you may not have communicated with someone like this before, here are some tips?" Can I ask for that? I'm a really social person, I just have a handful of behavioral symptoms that "give people a weird vibe" or make them think I'm being passive-aggressive with them when I'm not. And so often, the response to that is to give me a workspace that just doesn't have any people to deal with. Not only does that kind of suck, it also makes it even harder for me to learn new strategies, etc. for existing in that space. But at the same time, I *can't* handle being in that space regularly, and technically giving me my own space does fix that. What do you think?
