I have recently been diagnosed with Bipolar. I'm just beyond confused because my past Psychiatrist said that it was only Depression and Schizophrenia and even one of the mental hospitals diagnosed me with it. My current Psychiatrist noticed that I tend to talk a thousand miles a minute, have episodes of sadness, and then pure excitement and other things. Since I see shadows out of the corner of my eyes that aren't there and hear voices that no one else can hear, I was diagnosed with Schizophrenia as well. My psychiatrist said I have Schizoaffective disorder with Bipolar. It just makes no sense that my past psychiatric doctor didn't see it, so that means I have had Bipolar for twenty-eight years, undiagnosed until now. It does make sense though because both my brothers have Bipolar. Does anyone have any advice on how I can not lash out or be negative during one of my episodes? And how to possibly calm my racing thoughts so I can get back into writing? If it is of any good, I was put on Lamictial today.

I have schizo affective disorder and used to have uncontrollable thoughts that I didn’t like. I wasn’t able to be ok with them until I started meditating… practice just observing your thoughts as if you’re a non-judgmental third party observing them and just let them come and go. Sometimes more you try to interact with them the harder they are to deal with.

What matters is the medication and treatment not the diagnosis.

I was diagnosed as bipolar 1. Then I found a good doc who said it's schizoaffective bipolar type. The right antipsychotics can help, but it takes a lot to balance out the highs and lows. The swings suck. Feel free to chat with me anytime. If i am not online at the moment, I will get back to you asap. I hope this helps.

I was also diagnosed with schizoaffective for a period of time (as well as mdd) before getting diagnosed with bipolar! Some of the things I do may not work for you, but they work for me! Anytime I'm in a depressive state I let the people around me know, and then I'll do my best to take care of myself and whatever i need during that time (self care, sleep, hobbies, going on walks etc) if im feeling irritated or feel like i might lash out while talking, ill let them know i need some time and we can talk later, most of the time they are very understanding. I also write! i dont write very often, but i actually write in order to calm my raving thoughts, i usually use my notes app on my phone and i just word vomit whatever im feeling and it really helps to calm me down
