For people who take breaks on their adhd meds, why is it helpful? And is it harmful to do so? I’ve heard of people developing tolerance so is that part of the reason?

Breaks definitely help and have been recommended by every doctor I've been to since I was 7 (I'm 21 now). During public schooling I'd break completely dying the summer. I could feel my medication work less when I take it for day after day. However, speaking to the bad side, when I was on the wrong medication at too high of a dose (dose was high cause it wasn't working for me), taking a break meant the day ending the break would have high levels of anxiety and heart palpitations. So if you're on the wrong dose taking a break and restarting can be bad but also helps you to know you're on too high a dose.💕

Yes, you can build a tolerance to these meds. I’m on Adderall. It’s also good to give your brain a break from being on these meds. When you don’t need to take them, it’s a good idea to not take them. Unless your doctor told you otherwise, of course. I have bipolar II disorder with adhd. So, my psychiatrist always tells me if I don’t need to take the adderall to not take it. Does that make sense? It’s also a good idea to not take a bunch of medicine in general. The less medicine the better.

I just don’t take it if I don’t need it and nothing happens

I’m on Concerta- I sometimes will skip taking it if it’s a weekend and I have finished all my school work. I don’t personally have any bad reactions to it- it just kind of let’s me be me/gives me my personality back for a day and get out all my “fun” side aka things that wouldn’t be acceptable for me to do all day every day (I just tend to be more goofy and talk more)
