Anyone take Prazosin for PTSD nightmares/flashes or just sleep? I was on Prazosin many many years ago. So many that I don't quite remember if it worked or not.. Is it effective for you and on what dose? (I was reading about it and the doses seem wildly different depending on the site) PTSD has been so overwhelming recently for seemingly no reason. Getting no more than 3 hrs of sleep a night. Trying to determine if I should talk to my psychiatrist about it again, if it is worth the conversation.

I take it and it’s personally helped me a lot. I think i’m on like 2mg or 1mg but I used to have really vivid dreams/nightmares that would give me panic attacks and it’s helped a lot with those dreams/keeping me asleep through the night

@packersfan95 I've just started on 1mg yesterday and if it doesn't improve in 2 weeks to go up to two. I know it can't possibly work immediately but I did sleep a little more last Which could have been since I was up for almost 2 days. Or lowered my good pressure enough to relax me to sleep a bit more. Still nightmares? Sleeping thru the night would also be amazing! Last time I was on it I was at 7mg. So it may take a while before I can! I'm gonna continue working I my sleep hygiene and take and clean my browser. Thanks!

For me it is like night and day when I do take it or forget. I still often have bad dreams when i take it but I don't have the actual night terrors when I do. It's been probably my best medication choice.
@Harli that is so good to hear! I'm very glad it works for you. That gives me some hope. Even if it works for one person, then it has the potential to work for someone else! Thank you for sharing!

I used to have the same 2 nightmares every night, and would wake up either onto a panic attack, or not being able to move and hallucinating. At first 1mg took care of it for 2 years, until recently i had a triggering event and had to up it to 2mg. I haven't noticed any side effects, i take it at night, i don't get nightmares, i take some other supplements for sleep and i sleep very well. I also play instrumental music or nature sounds to help me relax so im less likely to have odd dreams. Also i think the pills are cute colors so it makes taking my meds suck less
@Aaronb03 to know the who had it work! That ha refreshing! Oo never thought about music playing lol. I'm hoping I make it to phase of my job.
@E_belli i forgot to say, i also take a melatonin called sleep 3, and that helps me sleep too
I specifically use prazosin for PTSD nightmares. It works most of the time and I use it with trazodone to help me sleep. My dosage for prazosin is 1mg. I still have some nightmares but not nearly as often. If anything I am calm when these nightmares happen and that sense of calm in those situations is unsettling sometimes.
@Juno_J I'm glad it works sometimes! Were you one to also take a low dose during the day too? Have you ever taken it without trazodone?
@E_belli I only take prazosin at night before bed. I don't think I have ever tried it alone without Trazodone.

I do take that and my doctor is slowly increasing it but half of the time it doesn't work
@cheerAsh0485 did you start at the lowest strength too? Do you feel it makes you tired during the day of hard to get up in the morning?
I was on prazosin for a while, and the doses where between 1mg and 2mg. I continued having nightmares even after the increased dosage. My Dr took me off of prazosin when I had a dangerously low blood pressure in her office. Recently I've been taking amitriptyline for migraine prevention and it has also helped me sleep, a long with reducing my nightmares. It's a win win for me but prazosin was a waist of time for approximately 5 months. Best of luck!
@Yuley I haven't heard of that med being used, good to know! And thanks for sharing. All great info. I will discuss whether there are ain't terms. How did you get ever get rid of it in your life? I hope nobody feels like no one cares until I moved!

@E_belli I had to get a neurologist referral and it took 3 months to be seen after calling my insurance with the referral so they could give me neurologist information
@E_belli I didn't completely get rid of it but I'm saying it helped
I also forgot to mention, on the off chance that it does work, if I wake up then go back to sleep (which I do every night), it stops working. So I might go to sleep and not have a nightmare but then when I wake up and go back to sleep, I have nightmares.
@SalineTurnip do you mind me asking your dose? If you don't want to that's cool took. Bc I think I got up to 7mg my last time but I'm reading they start you at 1mg but also read an effective dose is at least 16mg to 25mg. I partially feel like it might have been a little effective. But if I'm remembering correctly I think it is similar to you. I think it helped a few nights a week.i think that might be why I stopped taking it. But at this point even one night with like 4 consecutive hours of sleep would be heaven. Bc I get at best 3 hrs at night, broken up in 45 min to hour-long chunks but have recently been getting just under 2 hrs a night the last 1.5 weeks. And I'm fine during the day bc I'm on the highest don't of Vyvanse (a stimulant) but sleep sounds so relaxing. My mind and body are in desperate need of some rest! Lol. Idk know if my psych would even go for it. But your experience is helpful! Thanks for sharing!
@E_belli My dose is 2mg. I will be asking my doctor for a higher dose if possible. Thanks for sharing! I didn't know about the effective doses. I hope you get some proper rest soon, friend. Have you tried melatonin or a sleep tea like camomile or velerian root?
I take prazosin for PTSD nightmares. It doesn't work for me unfortunately. Maybe 1-2 nights a week I won't have nightmares. I wouldn't call that effective but my doctor said it's working. 🤷
I take weed to sleep. Knocks me out then prozac for ptsd
@SecondChance I have a history of substance abuse lol, otherwise weed would be my go-to. I'm also on Prozac, which is one of my miracle drugs for sure. Is your Prozac just for PTSD? Or also comorbid disorders? You don't have to tell me what they are, just curious now effective its been. Prozac helped me a lot with my OCD/anxiety and also evened out my bipolar mood episodes/depression.
