I am feeling completely demoralized. At the urging of my therapist, I finally took a step and started calling around to various places about IOP for major depression because I am having trouble doing basic level daily functioning. It was a nightmare just getting someone on the phone who knew what I was talking about, OR even getting a callback. A local psychiatric hospital with many outpatient locations was the only one who got back to me. They said they are only offering PHP and not IOP but I agreed to start the process anyway. My first step was to fill out paperwork and do an hourlong intake via telehealth with a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. That went well and she said she was referring me to the PHP day program. She told me that my case worker would be in touch with me. I waited a week and then contacted them 2 days ago for an update. Someone called me back and said I was waitlisted, it could be a wait of a month or more, and that all of their programs had waitlists due to overwhelming demand. I was furious that this was never communicated to me and I’ve had numerous interactions with them up to this point. They told me that the NP who saw me was supposed to tell me that there was a waitlist. In my opinion, the person who made initial contact with me should have told me that there was a waitlist. There are other aspects to the process that were not properly communicated to me either (namely, insurance coverage.) In any event, I had an intense psychological and physical reaction to this news (sobbing, almost throwing up) and I had to log off work. Yesterday I just completely fell asleep after working for about 5 hours and I didn’t get into trouble, nobody noticed I was gone. I still have not completely recovered from this, I was in a daze all day today. I feel really defeated, I’m seeing my therapist twice this week but the fact still remains that I still feel like I’m out there in limbo, just twisting in the wind. I asked for help and in the end I was just fucked with. It’s like nobody cares.

🙏❤️ Good luck, and it says it's for anyone in emotional distress. Not just people who are suicidal.

No problem, anytime! It sounds like staying home, and getting therapy over the phone/video chat would be better to fit your needs at this time. There are also crisis hotlines. There are hotlines out there for people that aren't suicidal.

Thanks for listening. It’s almost like they don’t have anything streamlined and they don’t talk to each other - the case managers are their own group, the intake physicians are their own group, and the PHP is its own group. The person on the phone didn’t even know that I had a therapist, she didn’t have my paperwork. They apologized and gave me a phone number to lodge a formal complaint with “Patient Advocacy.” I told them that I did not have the energy to do that but I let them know that this bombshell that they dropped on me had a devastating effect. The only thing they could offer me at that point was to admit myself into inpatient. I told them that my sister is an OR nurse manager and she said to avoid all hospitals if possible at this time due to COVID. Inpatient would be worse for me right now - I’m not suicidal and I don’t want to be treated as such, and I’m dealing with breathing issues due to an unresolved ENT issue and wouldn’t be able to handle wearing a mask 24/7.

I'm so sorry that you had to go through that experience. I really hope that they apologize, and have somebody on call at least until you can get off of the wait list. They really need to do better on crisis management. You can't be the only one type of patient out there that has this type of problem. I find it hard to believe that they could not remedy the issue. But the pandemic has really put a strain on all health care workers. People that normally don't have mental health problems are having awful mental health right now. I think it's supply and demand unfortunately. Everyone's overwhelmed, especially those of us that deal with chronic pain everyday.
