today is the anniversary of a tragedy that has entirely reshaped my life traumatically. my internal monologue just replays the day it all happened over and over, and at times it feels like i can physically feel the events happening. this event happened years ago, but was so impactful that i cant seem to break away from it, and anniversaries make everything so much more vivid. does anyone have any advice on staying functional during anniversaries of very traumatizing days? i have classes to attend but its all i can think about, sometimes it feels like it will swallow me up whole. thank you in advance, i hope everyone has a cozy day.

Today is also a significant trauma anniversary for me. What’s really helped me in the past was being extra kind to myself on the day. Wear something cute, have a nice meal, do some of my hobbies, go for a walk, allow myself to take more time on things than usual or even to not do things. Can’t focus as well in class? That’s okay. Can’t finish all the homework I need to get done today? That’s okay. Make today as cozy as possible. You can even take it one step further and try to plan something fun like going out with friends or watching a movie tonight to try to “reclaim” the day and associate with positive things. But if you don’t have the strength the do that this time around? That’s okay. Today is a grieving day for what you went through and how it affected your life. That’s big. Don’t try to fight the memories and emotions that come up today, but allow them to run their course through you, because they will eventually pass ❤️

Have you ever looked into EMDR? You don’t have to do intensive therapy. Look into an EMDR specific therapist. There is a good chance you can do some healing work around those anniversaries and greatly reduce your symptoms. In the meantime, take note of those days and be really kind to yourself leading up to them and right after. Being exceptionally kind to yourself and listening to your body, will go a long way with your focus and function ability…
