Does anyone know of any good free therapy resources? I can’t afford it but I feel like I’m losing my mind. I cannot quiet the self critical thoughts in my head. I don’t even believe the thoughts but I’ve internalized others’ ableism and criticism and it brings me down. Its now interrupting my everyday life and impacting my decision making. Please help

I've also been using an app called Thought Diary, just the free version has helped me a lot. It's CBT and I find the prompts helpful. It feels less of a chore than doing a workbook which means I am more consistent with it. Really good particularly if you lack motivation.

If you're in the UK you can get free therapy through the NHS, though there is a bit of a waiting list. If you're not in the UK there may be something similar where you are. Your doctor may be able to advise. Some private therapists also have plans for people on low income.

Best way to start when you are having these thoughts is to stop. Analyze the thoughts and look for facts that support those thoughts. If the facts dont support the thought, let it flow through. Everytime u have a self critical thought, positive or negative, look at the facts

@Thehindude Some feelings truly do seem so impossible until you hear it simply put. Self critical thoughts would be much harder to agree with if you don’t have facts or evidence to support them after all. This was a shift in perspective for me, thank you.

@PEMprincess i come to serve with the purpose to heal. I have hurted for a while. Maybe helping others will help me help myself

@Thehindude I wish it was that easy for me, I know that the more I try not to think about something the more I think about it. There’s this famous example of a pink elephant, where if I tell you whatever you do, do not think of a pink elephant, it is likely the only thing you’ll be able to think about. I’m so glad that looking at facts and trying to avoid negative thoughts works for you, but it’s definitely a bit trickier for a lot of us. I know that I will know fully well how I should feel and react and that my thoughts are irrational, but it doesn’t stop the feelings. Again, so glad you found something that works for you!

@Belugabear I have days where a feeling fact check would work perfectly and others that it wouldn’t work one bit. Thank you for your response. On trickier days your advice will help me feel seen, supported, and most of all be comforted by the idea it’s okay to chill with those horrible thoughts and feelings for the time being because they never stay forever!

@Belugabear it doesnt work perfectly for me. I still get very anxious and still have negative thoughts. I know its not as easy as said. And i am not where near perfect. I just know that through forming that habit and trying to teach myself not to do the negative talk every time it comes up. And stopping it right there helps me create new patterns in my brain.

Use a CBT workbook. I use one called "retrain your brain: cognitive behavioral therapy in 7 weeks." Research shows that using a CBT workbook is nearly as good as having a therapist, and it's only $10-15 as opposed to $60+ per week for regular therapy. Even better would be if you use the CBT workbook and also make some kind of plan with a friend to keep you accountable that you actually did that week's exercise.
