I try to explain it as like…I have an over active nervous system. So even if I can intellectualize things, and realize everything’s fine or doable, I mentally can’t respond to things without a crazy amount of stress. So like, being around people makes me anxious no matter the situation. Doing the dishes requires a lot of negative self-talk (which adds up by the end of the day and exacerbates the issue). Some days I’m a little suicidal and there’s no changing my mind, even if the day was pretty good. We’re working on calming our nervous systems down, because they don’t respond well to logic.

To be completely honest if they are not open minded it will be very hard, for someone who doesn't deal with mental illness in their mind it doesn't exist for a lot of people, just explain that there is a chemical imbalance in your brain that makes you feel these things and it's completely normal. sadly they will never understand your brain and what is happening but all you can do is try.
