I have recently found out at the ripe old age of 36 that I’m autistic. I’m on a waiting list for the official diagnosis appointment. I don’t know how to navigate this, I’ve learnt the term “masking” which I think I do quite a bit even to myself. I don’t really know what to do with myself after being told that I’m autistic.

It's never too late to learn! As someone with autism, I want to let you know that there's absolutely nothing you need to do about yourself except simply be yourself. If other people have a problem with that, that's their problem and not yours

The book Unmasking Autism by: Devon Price has been a great start for me. And welcome to the beginning of meeting the real you!

I'm at a similar stage in the ASD journey @BearBoots, and I am 42. I've been referred for diagnostic testing, but it can take two years to get started in the UK. I think that while we wait, we just get on with being ourselves? It has helped me to do a bit of background reading on ASD, particularly ASD in women. My biggest challenge just now is ignoring throwaway comments people make about ASD which are hurtful. I try to remind myself that I am a skilled 'masker', and they aren't to know I am awaiting diagnosis. Stay strong. 😊
I learned in my 30s. Finding an online community is very helpful but just remember not to compare yourself to everyone else. It's important to look at the similarities and not the differences since we are all individuals 🙂
I’m 26 I leaned I was autistic at 25 I think I learned more about autism now. I spent most of my life just googling the difference between autism and ADHD. In hindsight I just wish I knew sooner
i found the autistic twitter community really helpful. x
