I’m going to the doctors soon and want to bring up that I want meds and testing for adhd and my other conditions, but I don’t want to come off as pill-seeking. I really need the help, I can’t keep living like how I’m living. I’m interested to hear if anyone has tips for how to bring up meds with a general physician

I got a referral to a psychiatrist from my counselor who also has ADHD so I lucked out on the first step of my diagnosis journey. I also worried about coming off as pill seeking especially because I used Adderall I was not prescribed in the past (originally for recreational reasons, then I realized they work on me). But my counselor said that happens pretty frequently. Since you have to get a diagnosis first (and your general doctor wouldn't be the person to prescribe you meds, at least in the USA) I would emphasize your ADHD symptoms, how it affects your life, why you suspect you have it, etc. Then you will probably get referred to a psychologist and get screened with them. Make sure you get a referral. At this stage just be honest and detailed with your experience. Then you get handed back to a psychiatrist who will handle your medication. It's a process, but man is it worth it. I hope all goes well and you get the medical support you need <3

Generally, a good doctor shouldn't see you as pill seeking as long as youre getting tests done and you put an emphasis on needing it for quality of life. Just say something along the lines of, my Adhd is controlling my life effecting me in (couple of examples) areas of my life, i was wondering if I could try medication to see if it helps. Something like that.

Just do it casually they normally understand it's a thing, I'd recommend by not bringing up specific names like "can I get a prescription of Xanax" , just talk about your interested in the idea of trying medicine and go from there, and can mention if it's untested you can mention about being tested for ADHD, and they'll help you alone with that also, though it might be easier to ask a stand therapist instead of that, but both should work
