Hi! I need an opinion. I was diagnosed with FND a few months back after having tics for about two years. My neurologist did no testing, the only questions they asked me were to describe my tics and if I had the app tiktok. She kinda ignored me after I said I do have tiktok and told me that the only solution is to delete the app. I feel like the diagnosis of FND is incorrect but there is not another neurologist in my area. What should I do in this situation?

The best way to get a accurate diagnosis is with a video EEG which can rule out epilepsy.

based on your symptoms and timeline, it sounds like she might actually be right. the reason she asked about tiktok is because there was an interesting uptick in FND/functional tic disorder during quarantine among teenagers, esp teenage girls (probably due to a stress response to the pandemic). she's not saying you don't have a tic disorder, but that it's not exactly like tourettes or other movement disorders and can't be treated conventionally. she's probably right in that deleting tiktok, even just temporarily, will help, but she should also be referring you to a neuropsychologist. they can help retrain your brain's response to certain stimuli that's causing the tics. if your neurologist didn't refer you to neuropsych, ask for a referral. at the very least, they can advocate for you if it turns out to be a purely neurological problem

@wise sorry I skipped half a sentence: there was an uptick of FND among teenage tiktok users in 2020, not just teenagers in general
