Hi, I’ve moved to the UK and the health system here will not diagnose me with bipolar disorder. (I was diagnosed as bipolar in the US.) They are arguing for cyclothymic disorder here in the UK. I’d like to understand a bit more about both of these diagnoses and get the help I need. Can anyone offer insight?

I had a bipolar diagnosis (from a general practitioner) that was later confirmed as a misdiagnosis (from my psychiatrist). Instead, I have ADHD and cyclothymia. My advice is coming from personal experience. Basically- you may have some of the symptoms of bipolar, but not enough to be considered to have the condition. If you have less symptoms present than what is qualified as bipolar (or other conditions such as schizophrenia), but you do experience a cycling of highs followed by lows at a frequency more than every 4 months, then you're experiencing cyclothymia. I'm not sure if this is helpful, but many people in the US (particularly women) are misdiagnosed with bipolar from doctors who may not have the resources to give a proper diagnosis. It's actually super common for someone with ADD or ADHD to be misdiagnosed with bipolar, especially when that cycling is present
@Honeyleaf , thanks for the reply!
