Hello! so I was wondering if anyone else with autism also does this : when I get to go do something related to my special interest I literally get so excited about it that I almost can’t do anything else. For example, tomorrow I am going to the book store for books on my special interest (animals and biology) and I was sad I’d have to wait until Sunday when we planned it, but I am so excited I couldn’t care about anything else. I feel bad because it’s my mothers birthday and I am more excited about the bookstore and the antique store I’m going to as well. Anyone else?

It's not like you're disregarding your mother's birthday. The fact that you worry that you aren't prioritizing it shows that you genuinely care about her and things that are important to her.

Oh absolutely, it's very common for me to get more excited about doing something with my special interest (which is also animals and biology) than something like a birthday. I just look at it as our brains chasing the dopamine. It's not that we don't care about other things, but our brain is set on getting it's reward. That's not something we can control.
