How do you motivate yourself to stay in good shape? I’ve gained a lot of weight the past couple years as I’ve gone to food for comfort during difficult times with my health. Now I’m trying to lose the weight but struggle with keeping the habit of eating well and exercising regularly going. Any thoughts on how to motivate yourself or what sort of weight loss technique to try other than random diets?

      For me personally, what really helps is when I look at research about the benefits of whatever habit I’m trying to create to focus on that, reduce obstacles keeping me from doing so, and make it as enjoyable as possible. To stick with it, I weigh consequences since with chronic pain literally everything costs something. That helps me build confidence that I can stick with the plan and also take care of my priorities. I’m going to hurt whether I exercise or lay in bed so I might as well choose to do what I can and move. In the long run it does help me bring my pain levels down. Once the habit is built in a sustainable way, motivation increases on its own. I’m willing to help anyone struggling with this. I suffer with chronic pain and autoimmune conditions and staying motivated to exercise is such a struggle. My background is in exercise science, health coaching, and eating disorders (emotional or physically based). My philosophy is that it’s different for each individual and encompasses a lot of different factors. If it was easy, it would be a problem for so many people. So if anyone wants help personally, send me a direct message and I’d be happy to see if I can help figure out what would work for you. Or if your uncomfortable with that, we can post on this thread as long as the “author” approves. I pray y’all find what works for you🙏🏻🧚🏼

      The best recommendation I have if exercising is hard is drinking a ton of water and cutting out sugary drinks, and try and eat a little cleaner. I had to force myself to get fruit and yogurt rather than cheap snacks but it really helped me a lot. And some ice cream here and there never hurts. I just try to eat a little less than I usually would.

      I've struggled with the same thing too. I've never been overweight but i've struggled with making healthy food choices and caving to eating junk food. I was able to successfully change my eating habits for while by making gradual changes until most of what I was eating was healthy, but a few months ago I fell back into the bad habit of eating too much junk again due to it sometimes being my only comfort or pleasure during the day. Got to the point where even though I still eat healthy foods, junk food is making up at least half of my daily calories. Honestly, the one thing, maybe the only thing, that's helped me recently, is saying to myself, "let's eat completely healthy for one day. Just one day, I can do that". So I do it, because what's one day, right? Then.. that makes it easier, and it's like that little push makes it easier to do the next day. So I try the same thing again, and see if I can do one more day.. and so on. Also, if it helps to have just a little bit of something you're craving, do that. Sometimes I just really want a cookie, so I'll let myself have one or part of one. After that it becomes a little less tempting, like I got some of it out of my system. Another thing is it helps to almost make it a rule with yourself to eat something healthy first. a lot of times, for example, if I eat some fruit, that satisfies my desire for something sweet for a while and I don't need the junk. It ends up being more satiating and shuts down my appetite quicker than say, ice cream so it helps to reach for it first. I hope some of this was helpful at all

      I wish... I have the same problem but mines opposite of eating my appetite is absolutely nothing but when I do eat it's junk and trying to find stuff that's healthy while on foodstamps and not being the one who does the grocery shopping really don't help either
