I just recently got a new therapist, and in our first session together she said something along the lines of “I can see you have some very severe anxiety”. I never considered my anxiety to be a huge problem for myself because “everyone gets nervous”, and I think I really had gotten use to the constant level of anxiety I have to endure. Only after thinking it over have I realized how deeply my anxiety affects me on a daily basis! It came to the point of me only considering myself to be anxious when I had an anxiety attack (which happens more often than I’d like to admit). …Everyone around me noticed how anxious I was way before I did… has anyone else had a similar experience of not realizing how much something affects them?

Yes! When diagnosed with anxiety I took it with a grain of salt. I remember thinking like I’ve seen this person and they’re anxious but I’m not like that so it must not be that bad. It took me years to realize how normal but also encompassing mine was. It just didn’t look or feel like what I thought anxiety was growing up. I thought it was mood swings or anger problems for a while until I learned more about it. Same goes for physical issues docs would be like uh well I can’t find anything so it probably anxiety so try to relax and I’d just look at them like they were crazy. Now I’m strongly aware of how much my anxiety effects me physically but for the most part it to me researching and learning more as well as talking to others about their experiences to finally be like oh damn I’m anxious and when I’m anxious this and this gets worse or happens…

My counselor told me the same. I never realized what I was experiencing was anxiety. I labeled it under irritation/slight anger. 🤔 makes me wonder what else I'm misreading about my own feelings. 🤷‍♀️

@dolphinblues Yes! Haha I never understood why I got so irritated all the time-so quickly

@CDog I knew I had anxiety about crowded places and too much noise. I asked my psych for anxiety medication. He would not give me anything but low dose hydroxyzine. That did nothing for it. He told me that he doesn't like to prescribe anything for anxiety because it only takes care of symptoms and masks the actual problem. He wanted me to get to the root of it and fix it. How can I fo that if the symptoms keep me from focusing enough to rationally think about it? Needless to say, he isn't my psych anymore. LOL

I get anxious almost all the time when I'm not alone at home 😅 previously I thought I masked it semi okay but I've had a lot of my friends tell me I'm social awkward because of my anxiety. Never realized it was basically constant before that, but nothings changed, just my awareness of it.
