I've found that when I've committed to calorie counting (in a NON-obsessive, forgiving way), that's helped me see actual progress relatively soon. The idea being that at first you can use the tool to see what your usual intake is to learn where you should focus first. For me, I've found that I need to better practice portion sizing, for example. The best app I've found for this by far is MyPlate (the logo is a dark-salmon-colored circle with a white fork & knife on it).
