For my fellow zebras - I have seen SO much argument on the EDS FB group about using a chiropractor or not. I have been seeing a chiropractor and I feel like it is the only time that my bones are aligned in the way they were intended to be, however I’ve also hear many people say that is more of short term relief causing more long term consequences- what is everyone’s thoughts? Super mega bonus points for anyone who has SOURCES you can site - thanks

I see a non-traditional chiropractor. She only really does soft tissue work and slight stretches for the vertebrae I have that are immobile. Never any popping with me. I think it's important that your chiropractor is aware of what EDS is and what damage certain manipulations can cause. For example, she explained to me that with someone with EDS, popping the neck can cause a ruptured artery 😅 So far, her treatment has been very gentle and seems to be helping

Well to start, chiropractors are controversial to begin with. The core basis of their studies is that there is an supernatural energy in the marrow of your bones that can "possess" the fluids in your joints and cause you to be "out of alignment". And by popping all your joints you get rid of the ghosts haunting your synovial fluid and are aligned. Even though most modern chiropractors won't tell you this now, one of the cores of their education used to be getting their patients to essentially do an at home exorcism on their joints. I'm into all kinds of woo and believe in life force energy and such but chiros are a whole different level of pseudoscience because they actually got to sneak into the medical field and somehow get viewed as legitimate despite the hundreds of thousands of cases of nerve damage, joint injuries, overextention of muscles and tendons, muscle tears, and people left paralyzed after adjustments. And despite the fact that there is no actual evidence besides anecdotal that adjustments do anything at all besides potentially cause harm. Personally I wouldnt see a chiro for anything even if I didn't have EDS.
The arguement really comes from people meeting good and bad chiropractors. If you arent as familiar with EDS as a chiropractor, it can really hurt somebody. They literally pop and snap normal joints, which can really hurt somebody with EDS if they dont realize how fragile some of us are. The same effect can come from a doctor with a degree in osteopathic medicine, but with more of a clinical medicine background. The reality is chiropractors go to school for less time so thats just less of a familiarity with a really difficult topic
