So I’m in the process of being evaluated for disability. I have 4 mental illnesses and psoriatic arthritis. Every time I talk to my mom she says “I know someone one with this or that. They aren’t disabled”. “I don’t think you’re disabled. You still take care of your daughter”. Like these things are so hurtful. Yes I can care for my family most days with extreme help from hubby. But I can’t go to the store alone. I can’t drive. I can’t sleep. These are real things affecting my life. And my family just acts like they’re a cold I can get over.

I've been battling 3 mental illnesses and osteoarthritis and was just denied for disability after waiting a year for a decision. Now I have to somehow shake that off and figure out my next steps while trying to stay positive. Very hard to do when everything else in my life is in turmoil due to my inability to work and I was truly hoping SSD would come through.

Parents never want to believe that their child has any illness. Until you go to a doctor and get a verified “label” they won’t take it seriously. I encourage you to keep up getting treatment and just know that you are validated here! My mom still does this even though I know she knows my behaviors are “abnormal.”

@Strawberry_Princess My family member has seen papers and had a doctor tell him in person he still thinks I’m “over reacting” about my disability

That's called gaslighting and it's atrocious when someone does that to their relatives. And therapist worth their salt will tell you that other people's disabilities do NOT invalidate your own disabilities. It's not a competition to see who's more disabled. Been there.

@LadyTauriel my mother has been gaslighting me since I was a child 🤦🏻‍♀️ I spent 10 years in therapy for it. I know what she does. So does my doctor. They have met lol

Ps taking care of your kids is different then being out in the world working.. I wish our parents would understand that.

I understand you. I'm bipolar on top of many other things. Best advice I can give you is just keep it between you and your husband if you get it. If your family is like this now imagine how they will be if you get it. Is your doctor willing to fill out the forms? I think you will have a better chance if your doctor tells them. Good luck.

@thisgirl2311 my doctors have sent all forms. I haven’t been able to work since my daughter was born 4 years ago. I’ve been seeing the same PCP the whole time. She was the one who gave me the letter for accommodations at my job when I was pregnant for my anxiety. After I had my daughter even grocery shopping causes heart palpitations and dizziness 😳
