How do y’all with chronic illnesses deal with traveling? I’ve always been scared of traveling too far from home. I get the thought that I’ll get sick while I’m away from home, so it’s not worth going anywhere. I’ve only just started to go to conventions and go out with friends, but it’s still hard. I’m at an anime convention right now, and I feel so exhausted and awful. I’m ready to go home, but we don’t leave until tomorrow. How do y’all deal with traveling? Do y’all have things to help you cope while away from home? I’m so tired of getting/feeling sick while out trying to just have fun.

I get major anxiety going anywhere new, especially with IBS. Usually to help with this I do my best to locate the nearest toilet as I reguard that as a safe space. I also take comfort items with me everywhere, especially stuffed animals and I make sure I'm well prepared for my day. I usually carry a backpack with everything I need in it, and if I have any extra bags I try to make sure my extra medications are in there too.

Sorry to hear that you're having a hard time on your trip-- I've definitely been there. I find that including some room for "rest days" in your trip schedule is really helpful. When I travel with friends/family, I try to be upfront about how my chronic illness requires flexibility and patience. That means that sometimes I can't see everything I want to, or I might miss (or have to rearrange) some activities --and that's okay! I also take extra care to take my meds and pain killers really consistently when I travel.
