My psychiatrist told me last week that it’s likely that I am on the spectrum, but that he can’t formally evaluate me. I was venting about issues & frustrations I’d had throughout my life. It was the first time I’d been to a psychiatrist. He recommended I find a counselor that specializes in working with people on the spectrum. I am going to do that, but do you think it’s worth being “formally tested”? I’m uncertain of whether or not I really want that. After I met with my psychiatrist, I’ve been researching & self-evaluating as much as possible, & I’ve been seeing all of my frustrations & issues in a different light. It’s been both helpful & overwhelming. I am 29.. did a formal evaluation help you, or would you say I could potentially just work with a counselor & sort through this on my own? Sorry this isn’t very succinct, just trying to get some feedback on my situation. I just want to understand myself so that I can love myself. I’ve hated my brain my entire life, but I want so badly to learn how to love & accept it…

Knowledge is power. The more you know about yourself, the better you can take care of yourself. I recommend the "formal testing" because what you learn could very well help your counseling.
