Hi, so I’m pretty sure I’m on the autism spectrum. Like 90% sure. I’ve done a lot of research and I see my current and younger self in so many of the traits. My therapist doesn’t believe me and that felt so awful to hear. I’ve been feeling pretty discouraged from going on to getting a diagnosis or talking about it with my psychiatrist. So, I was wondering if anyone knew of some resources for me to bring with me. I know online tests are obviously not very accurate, but I was wondering if there was any sort of checklist for diagnosis that I could access and use as taking points. I would also be very happy to hear about anyone’s similar experiences and how they felt with this. Thanks :)

      I think I might be on the spectrum as well. I've been so scared go reach out because I was dismissed by my mother 2 years ago when I brought it up. This year I've finally gotten the courage to search for a therapist I like and on our first meeting together she believes it could be a possibility and told me about centers that do testing. My advice is try a general doctor or search for a new therapist.

      I'm not autistic so I can't give a lot of advice in further tests + resources but it's very important for healthcare providers to listen to their clients & it's not fantastic that your therapist is jumping the gun on not believing you. At the end of the day, they cannot physically see into your brain nor can they experience the things you've experienced. If they continue to doubt you I'd definitely seek further analysis from other professionals. If you're somehow wrong, your therapist should give other alternatives to your symptoms rather than shutting you down completely. If it's a complete shutdown it's probably made out of personal bias rather than a genuine analysis of your symptoms. A lot of autistic people can be really good at masking symptoms (so I've heard) so that may be apart of the bias problem? In any case, good luck

      I'd be a little sus of your therapist for just like, "not believing you." If you struggle with the symptoms of it and you are legitimately concerned about having autism spectrum disorder, it's not really your therapist's place to dismiss that possibility. I would pursue finding a referral for further testing--if your therapist won't give you that referral, maybe go through a primary care physician etc, or try contacting the places yourself?

      I have this problem too with my doctor saying that as long as I can speak ok then I shouldn't test for it so I totally know that feeling like no one is in your corner to get things figured out. I took like 9 different online tests and they all said I was on the spectrum and it runs in the family so you'd think that would make it easier to believe but I guess according to some doctors it isn't. Just keep trying and get a second opinion because getting it diagnosed is important for moving forward

One suggestion is to search for the AQ Test, take the test, and print out the results to show your psychiatrist. Additionally, you can check in with universities near you to see if they have psychiatric/autism clinics where student doctors can help you for cheap or even free.
