Have you ever been told “you don’t look autistic” or something similar after telling someone you’re autistic? I find it incredibly frustrating and annoying! Do neurotypicals just expect autistic people to all look like Sheldon Cooper from Big Bang Theory, or???
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
I completely understand! It's aggregating
I hate that there’s not really a huge variety of representation when it comes to autism in popular media. People just look at me and think “oh there’s no way you’re autistic” and I imagine it’s because they’re expecting a very narrow stereotypical presentation of symptoms and behaviors (dude shouting at the top of his lungs in a monotone voice and standing way too close to ppl?? idk) Being diagnosed as an adult explains a lot of… my entire life, but I really wish I had social support growing up as a kid ugh
