My therapist wants me to make friends, but the issue is, I don’t want to make friends. She said that it’s hurting me more than I think it’s helping me, but my way of seeing it is- why form relationships with people if they all just leave you in the end?

Connections help give our lives meaning that is larger than the individual. Oftentimes that does include painful things like being abandoned or heartbroken, and that risk always exists. Of course, family, peers or even a therapist or people on this app are all valid connections, it doesn’t have to be friends. Building a support system helps us the handle the challenges that life throws at us that we may be ill equipped to handle by ourselves. That means sometimes we are needed by others, and that can be meaningful. There’s no rule that you have to have connections at all time periods in your life. Maybe you’re not ready for friends at the moment. You would know better than anyone.
