How do I motivate myself to finish anything? I’m a very smart person but couldn’t even get through two years of college. Just could not make myself do the homework. I started a small business and let it fade out after like two months. I can’t get myself to finish anything or follow through. Any tips?

Honestly, I feel the same. The only way that I’m still in college currently is because I have a really great support system, especially while I’m in crisis. I’d say find those things you can lean on and focus on building that support system and understanding who’s there for you. I get your frustration of wanting to stick to something, but I think thats a kind of freedom our brains afford us that others don’t, you know? Live life. See all these different things before you settle!

I’ve found for me that leaving time for plenty of rest breaks helps me. I take one about every hour and that way I know that if I keep working I’ll have a break to look forward to. Hope this helps!

it helps if you have some form of external motivation. when I can’t, finish things, I find it’s because I lose my motivation, I often can’t really imagine consequences or rewards for not doing the thing I have to do. It’s like yes, I know that if I want to keep my scholarship I have to get good grades and to get good grades I have to do this assignment, but I just don’t want to. I’d rather do something else, or nothing at all. That’s why an external motivator, some sort of thing outside of you, like a reward, or someone else cheering you on, can help. Once, when I just really needed to get something done, but had ZERO motivation or willpower, i asked my mom what I could do to motivate. And she suggested that if I finished before a certain time that she would take me out to get food from my favorite restaurant. I did that work so fast. So an external motivator like that helps. It also helps to make a list of things you have to do, like on a notepad or a sticky note, and cross them out or crumple them up as you get through them. It makes completing something a bit more satisfying and physical, so you don’t just start things and give up halfway, you go all the way to the end and finish because you want to throw that paper away. Anyway, i hope those help, they help me get work done <3
