Hi, I’m new to the app, I was wondering if anybody had any natural remedies to help with anxiety. I would prefer to find useful non-medication ways to help myself first, I’ve had my anxiety for most of my life and now I’m finally mentally prepared to nip-it-in-the-butt.

@Magpie3 Do be aware, the ashwaghanda is amazing for some, but upset my stomach and made me very tired. Hopefully you won’t have that though!

If you’re headed into an anxiety spiral, ice or something sour helps get you out of it. My therapist gave me that tip and it helps me

Like a lot of people have alluded to, things that shift focus and ground you can be really helpful—whether it’s essential oils, breathing, temperature, etc. I’m not sure where you are on your journey with this but for me, it’s also been really huge to start getting to the root of my anxieties with my therapist. Obviously you need a trusted therapist who isn’t just going to push meds and do nothing else for this to work, which it sounds like you didn’t have previously, so if you haven’t found someone new, you may want to look. My therapist uses a mix of different methods including DBT, REBT, and a different therapist that I liked a lot used ACT. Finding someone with one of those frameworks or otherwise who works in a modality that makes sense to you and is relevant to anxiety could be really helpful. You can and should still find and use these type of coping mechanisms and tools! In my case, I’m on meds as well, but being able to understand my anxiety’s patterns better through skilled talk therapy has also been invaluable to disrupting it.

I use coping mechanisms like coloring, watching something funny (usually YouTube), and talking to friends. Those have helped me more than any medicine I have ever tried. Currently unmedicated and it has been a few days since my last anxiety attack (I think 3 days). I reach out to one specific friend when I feel it getting bad and he distracts me until it is low enough for me to have forgotten that I'm anxious.

I've heard that St. John's Wort (an herbal supplement can be used to help with anxiety/depression, but I've not tried it myself. I personally find that taking a walk helps because it moves the anxious energy out of your body. I also practice mindfulness exercises.

Magnesium works wonders to help with my anxiety. As well as CBD and ashwaganda is a life saver as well

I love my essential oils, and I've taken lavender supplements in the past as well.

Going into pinterest and searching up anxiety coping methods can also be helpful

Multiple therapist told me that if you eat something that's sour like lemon drops it refocused ur brain off the anxiety and onto the taste somehow. So I suggest whenever you're starting to feel anxious, eat a lemon drop!

Are you looking for behavioral stuff too or just herbal?

@outpickingdandelions I’m looking for anything really, my last therapist was a bit of a quack and refused to show me any coping methods, she decided to push medication and I’m not ready for medication yet

@Magpie3 already sent these to some people but here are my favs! 1. Journaling! I journal every night before bed and also if I get really spirally so I can plot out my thoughts, why they're irrational, and what i can do to cope 2. Exercise. I know this isnt accessible to everyone but if I can get on a bike or lift weights or take a walk it typically helps the somatic symptoms of anxiety 3. Comforting show. Right now mine is gravity falls! Just watching that and doing something with my hands like video games or crochet or just fidgeting 4. Creating a comfy space. This is more for dealing w my PTSD but I like to wrap myself in blankets, turn on a soft light, light a candle, and watch some sort of show. Helps make my brain soften.

Magnesium supplements helped my ex a bit. Aswaghanda has helped some ppl too. But i'd definitely check with a doctor first. And dont mix herbal supplements with any medications if you start taking them unless your doc okays it
