It depends on the cause. If it's dur to tiny crystals in your inner ear floating out of place, they'll try doing epley movements to move them back into place. You can see samples on YouTube. They should work within 3 attempts. If it doesn't then there is probably another cause. Could be BP problem. Brain tumor. Or nerve damage which was the final conclusion for me. I have chronic vertigo, with occasional flare-ups that I call "vertigo days". Yesterday was a vertigo day meaning I felt more movement and was a little more off balance than my norm. An ENT should test your hearing, test your eye movements in a pitch black room with special goggles on you. Position you and see which way your eyes tick. Make sure you don't have a viral or bacterial infection in the ear. (Mine worsened with a viral infection.) Order an MRI to make sure you don't have a benign tumor. They can give you medication but all it does is make me sleepy. The medication is basically prescription strength for the stuff you buy before going on a cruise if you get motion sickness. I'm forgetting the generic name, but it's called meclizine as a rx drug.
