TW: Self harm Is it normal to miss cutting after not doing it for about a month? Or am I just going crazy?

yes. my intrusive thoughts always pop back up in situations where i’m disappointed with myself or very overwhelmed, it’s just a matter of learning coping skills and knowing you’re better off without it

It’s completely normal because it’s comfortable and not engaging makes you uncomfortable but eventually the uncomfortable feeling will subside.

In my experience yes. I was low key addicted to it and went through emotional withdrawals for it.

I'm a few years clean and I still miss it. Anytime I see a sharp object my brain goes back to it. Or if I'm super exhausted emotionally I think about it. I'm super glad you're clean though, hopefully it gets easy to cope with the loss of a coping mechanism.

Yes. I dealt with so many confusing feelings around this when I would try to stop. I haven't don't in years now, but I remember feeling like it was sort of an addiction and then having so many guilty feelings about wanting to do it. Another good tip can be holding icecubes/putting them on your wrists or back of neck or putting your hands up to your wrists in ice water for about 3 minutes. It helps reset your nervous system and still gives you a bit of a pain feeling from the iceness

From what I've seen it is normal, and I struggle with the same thing. I'm really sorry you have to deal with it but I know we'll both make it <3

it’s normal to miss it after a period of time. and don’t worry, you’re not crazy. im 10 months clean, and im still surprised im even at 10 months. and at some points, i miss it too. but you need to control the urge of doing it. hang in their, love. 💕

I have been clean for quite a while but every time I get stressed out to an extent it’s what I want to do more than anything else. I get so upset because of how much I miss it. I’ve been trying to find a new coping skill for 10 years now and I’m 3 months into hopefully figuring it out! I know 3 months doesn’t sound like awhile for kicking it but for me it is! Celebrate your small wins❤️❤️instead of cutting I would draw in read marker all over my skin. Like ALL over. I’d write the words I was saying in my head too. It really helped, maybe you could try it❤️

It’s normal to miss a coping mechanism. Despite its obvious drawbacks, it offered you something — a release, a way to counteract the emotional pain, etc. You’re not crazy at all.
