my (now ex)therapist told me that i had ptsd and i was still actively being traumatized since i’m still in the situation dealing with the triggers. when i brought up that i might have cptsd, she told me that “it’s not a real diagnosis since it’s not in the dsm-5”, and that i just have ptsd. i’ve gone through a lot, i think i might have cptsd since there’s a lot i have yet to voice out loud & process. i can’t tell if that’s just me being picky about a name to my diagnosis, but for some reason it matters a lot to me. when my next therapist asks me what i’ve been diagnosed with, should i say ptsd or cptsd? was my ex therapist right or wrong? does it even really matter?

Complex ptsd and ptsd are two different things. Complex is when you can’t heal from the trauma properly because something else happened during healing process. It is a real condition watching some YouTube videos about it

like sayre, I also have had both. I was a licensed therapist before disability. I agree, they are two very different diagnosis. Dsm is heavily used for insurance billing but it is NOT the psychology Bible. The more specific the terminology the more information it conveys. It is possible, however, that your therapist is being strict on the name of the diagnosis to stay inside insurance guidelines.
