Hi everyone! I’m new here. I have fibromyalgia and am experiencing a lot of pain after a deep tissue massage a couple of days ago. I was trying to help myself but made it worse :( I didn’t know deep tissue massage was not recommended for people with fibromyalgia. It was painful but I thought it meant that it’s working. I thought if it helps other people with muscle tension it would help me too but it only increased my pain… Has anyone experienced this and if so, how did you get through the flare? If you are also suffering from chronic pain, sending lots of love your way ♥️

Yes, that has happened to me so if I get a massage I have to ask for them to do it medium pressure. Even a massage chair has done this as well. Soaking in Epsom salt baths really help me. Chronic pain is no joke

So massages are good but not deep tissue ones. Drink a lot of fluids!!!! I mean make yourself pee like you never have before lol. But hot showers and laying flat on the floor helps me. Not on the bed because it gives into your body shape and can cause more discomfort when you are up and moving

thank you 🙏🏻 I will definitely try drinking more fluids and laying flat on the floor is a great idea! I definitely have more back pain from laying on the bed or couch or anything soft. Maybe I’ll sleep on the floor tonight lol

Deep tissue will make it worse. What you need to do is find a Myofascial Release specialist. It’s a specific technique which focuses on working the fascia which is what our fibro affects. They’ll break up the little adhesions and sticky spots and smooth your muscles back into place.

I try to do at least one hour long session once a month and it changed my life

As soon as you get home from ANY massage, soak in a tub with Epsom salts. Here's a link that explains the benefits: https://igotyourbackmassage.com/why-do-massage-therapists-say-to-take-an-epsom-salt-bath-after-a-massage/

Oh my gosh I feel this. I’ve had many deep tissue massages and they were extremely painful lol, like me using every ounce of willpower to not cry out in pain during it painful. It bruised me up and I was extremely sore for like a week. Use ice to reduce some inflammation but yes I would steer clear or deep tissues massages, if the massage itself hurts you, then it’s not going to help you (that’s my rule of thumb for my fibro 💕)
