Does anyone else get overstimulated in movie theatres? My boyfriend thought I was crying at the movie but I just started crying at how bright the screen was, how loud the speakers were, and how uncomfortable the chairs were. Does this happen to anyone else?

I usually bring earplugs to the movie theaters. Maybe you could try wearing sunglasses for your eyes.

For some reason most movie theaters aren't that bad (then again I usually only go during Ghiblifest which are often quieter films), but I can't do concerts. It sucks because I've been even called a buzzkill and a party pooper for either denying any invites or having a sensory overload.

YES, for sure. it really sucks but with support from friends we can handle it better -atlas

I can barely handle it. I wear sunglasses, comfy clothes, and use Savears earplugs which my ex boyfriend put me on to. He was a music producer. It softens the sound but you can still hear clearly. It also helps that they come in a clear color so I can use them steathily. I also get a cold drink which seems to help.

You're definitely not the only one! I also hate going to movie theaters - it's just a really overwhelming experience for me, in terms of sensory stuff. Earplugs kind of help, but it's still not ideal.

You are not alone. This is why I can’t go to the movies, it’s so loud, bright, weird seating. Going to the movies is supposed to be fun, it’s supposed to be chill and enjoyable. But I don’t feel like that’s really the case, and if it’s not, that’s okay. I think we can make an even more comfortable and enjoyable movie watching in the comfort of our own spaces.

YES! Sometimes I literally forget I’m built differently. Thank you for the reminder!

Honestly I always think Im oversensitive to these things and should just suffer through too. But like… literally I am. Its in my brain. It is real and happening and it fucking hurts. Not our faults we arent like others. So I realized those things weren’t worth it. Glad to help you sort out the why!

Thank goodness! I thought I was being overly sensitive or something. I haven’t gone in years and remembered not liking it but couldn’t remember why. I remember now and I’m glad I’m not alone!

Oh I dont go to movie theaters for that exact reason. Its sensory hell and I too would burst into tears from all of it. Youre meant to enjoy the movie but I just cant when I cant turn down the volume in loud action scenes or sit the way I want or adjust the brightness if it suddenly skips to a bright scene. Just feels like Im being smacked around the whole movie through and Im left burnt out. Youre definitely not alone in that.
