Hey! So i just had a therapist i been with for 3 sessions say she didnt think i had adhd or social anxiety, and that i have bpd. i have been diagnosed w social anxiety for 6 years and adhd is newer. she kinda invalidated me bc i said i was probably masking my adhd as a kid with my social anxiety. and she was like nah the symptoms are always pretty obvious for adhd. many times bpd is misdiagnosed as anxiety and adhd. idk do ur therapists talk to u like that? kinda rubbed me the wrong way

I feel therapists and doctors are here to listen to their patients. If you are already diagnosed and your diagnosis resonated with you, why change it? Some therapists and physicians stop patient's medication when it works just fine or they can't function without it. Idk where they get off with invalidating their patient and putting their experience in school over the patient's physical body and real experience. Maybe you should change therapists if you feel she doesn't listen to you.

I think your therapist may have overstepped a bit, but I hope you get a better one.

I'm sorry, that's really too bad she treated you like that! She is not a good listener and therefore not a good therapist. Maybe in the mean time of finding a new one you could tell her how it made you feel so she has feedback

@YanyLaurel I did, she asked me why i suddenly shut down as the session went on and all. idk i explained and then she explained herself and i still walked out kinda feelin bad still lol

Get a new therapist. No therapist should EVER belittle your feelings or make you feel like your feelings are invalid. The whole point of having a therapist is to talk to them about anything and everything with zero judgment. I had a therapist who judged me and invalidated me, now I have a new therapist and she’s so helpful and amazing it’s made a huge difference in my life. ADHD symptoms are not always so obvious and they can grow more apparent as you get older. She’s there to help you, not make things worse for you. Honestly, you should file a complaint about her. There are probably other patients of hers that feel the same way you do but might be too afraid to do anything about it. You wouldn’t just be helping yourself by leaving her, you could be helping so many others as well.

@Lanny I agree! Alot of neurological symptoms aren't so obvious. That's one of the issues I have with the DSM-5. Sure it's a guide for diagnosis but I feel it leaves out a whole other experience or knowledge about these disorders. It's not just about showing symptoms, it's also the effort to takes to hide/mask or mitigate these symptoms. You don't have to be a hyperactive, super impulsive, nonfunctional individual to have ADHD. You can be well rounded, have many achievements, attributes and friends and be neurologically diverse. Therapy shouldn't only be for treating a patient or identifying a problem, but also preventing a problem altogether.

@Lanny yea she is direct, idk guess thats her style. she said she disagreed with her patients many times and to not take anything she says personal? like we talking professionally like uhhhh im kinda telling u PERSONAL things and u literally giving me advice based on those things ???
