if anyone had Dysautonomia or POTS-like symptoms while in middle or highschool, how did u manage your symptoms regarding sports or gym class? it was always a big struggle for me, especially when i had to do certain exercises which raised my symptoms. one of my main issues growing up with dysaugonomia was exercise intolerance.

I didnt know I had exercise intolerance at the time so i just kept going to gym class and completely stressing my body out. I know its hard not being able to participate or awkward having to sit out but i got a lot worse because I didnt.

My pediatric cardiologist wrote me a note that essentially excused me from PE forever because of exercise intolerance. I didn't know doctors had that much power but he sure did deliver! So no gym class for me the second half of high school (my illness started late sophomore year) I was never into sports so it wasn't an issue for me but I've heard stories of folks having to give up their passion for soccer or whatever due to dysautonomia and it sucks, very sad š The only exercise I can handle is my little under desk pedaler bike and some floor pilates but both of those are rare occurrences anymore since my fatigue has been so awful lately. Sometimes I get the longing to sprint a short distance (like across the backyard) or play a more physical game but I know my body can't handle it so I just pine away and do a few squats or seated leg stretches to try and alleviate the urge
@Lunarr im in my last year of highschool and iām going to a new school and really donāt want to have do deal w the gym classes cause of my intolerance. itās so embarrassing to have to sit out at times but i have to. since my symptoms started in 7th grade my dr just gave me a school note that said i know my limits and need to sit when needed. which now has turned into very often as it get harder to do activity
@tatertot731 Definitely recommend talking to your doctor (maybe getting a new note) and your school counselor about your increased struggles. They're both there to help you, though the counselor may be a bit busier since it's the beginning of the year. I think it's worth talking to them, though. I'm assuming you have a 504 plan or IEP but if not holy wow please look into it, or if you have one ask to alter it so you don't have PE requirements anymore. Unfortunately you have to be your own advocate in this situation and all you can do is try. I totally get the weird sitting out thing, for a few weeks I was required to sit in the gym despite not participating and it was stupid,, Also please don't be embarrsed for taking care of yourself! It doesn't matter what other people think if it's what's right for you. One time I had to sit in the middle of a mall food court line and some people stared at me, yeah, but it was necessary so I didn't pass out, ya know? Learning to unlearn societal expectations is a process for sure, I think folks like us should always priotize our well being over trying to seem healthy/"normal"
