Do any of you feel like the things you’re really into and passionate about don’t count as a special interest because you’re not into them enough? Like I get super in depth and into tons of stuff but I never feel like I have a real special interest, which makes me think maybe I’m not like neurodivergent enough or something? I don’t know how to put it into words but I feel like I’m invalidating myself and idk what to do. For examples, I’m really into stuff like FNAF, Slime Rancher, Overwatch, Dnd, Making fantasy worlds, making original characters, dogs, psychology, moths, bones, etc But I feel like I’m not into just one of them enough yk? I’m not sure

I feel this a lot. One of my friends who's also nd is very VERY into one of his special interests and knows probably everything there is to know about it. Meanwhile my special interest happens to be the same thing, but I don't know nearly as much about it so it makes me feel fake. You're not alone though! And it doesn't mean you're less nd or anything. It happens and that's okay.

I am really into Bop It, that game that started in the 90s. I am really involved in it, and I know the Inventor personally. It's my most special interest that I really like an awful lot. I do have other special interests but I don't think it's a good idea to mention what it is here on Alike. It's not a bad interest, but it's just weird in my opinion.

I get that so much! Though I think I just decided that talking about mental health and human mental development is mine. It took a while but I realized one day that nobody talks about it to the extent that I do, and does the amount of research I do. Like I couldn't handle any jobs around this topic but I realized how much I talk about it or think about it in comparison to others. Surprisingly it's not a great topic though because it's very lonely.

No but it's completely OK and valid!!! Please don't feel like your the only one who feels that way cause your not :D

Omg yes. I was just having a real moment with this earlier today contemplating my whole understanding of myself before I had this app suggested to me. It feels so good to know it's not just me. There are things I have always been obsessed with and I thought those were special interests but because I can't recall every single fact I know about them or if I don't actually know every single thing about them I invalidated myself a lot.

@MaJo yes exactly, like I’m obsessed about a ton of different things but if I don’t like know everything about it I start to invalidate myself

I feel that to my core. Especially over dnd, I always fixated over it but never had the opportunity to really play it until the last year. so due to experience I still feel like its a lie to claim that as one of my special interests even tho I put my heart and soul into my characters and strats😭

@Erebyssian I HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEM. I’ve never got to play with anyone else but the amount of time and effort I put it makes me feel like it might be a special interest

I suppose the question is what you're trying to prove? Why does it matter if you're into them enough? Enough for what? Don't place labels on yourself or your interests. You enjoy them, and that's all that matters. Not what other people think

I'm still figuring out which of my intense interests are special interests vs hyperfixations. In all honesty, i know music is a special interest for sure, but I've also had tons of interests that go dormant for a little while until I get re-excited, and I have a lot of major interests that aren't quite the same as music, for me, but are still major interests of mine nonetheless.

That’s completely valid and makes a lot of sense! I’m the same way!

        677d

@LyricRainn111 oh thank god, I just felt like maybe I’ve been lying to people this whole time because I don’t have a specific special interest so that means I can’t be neurodivergent and it makes me worry a lot😅

        • OodlesOfNoodles

          676d

@Cursednoodles I'm confused. Is neurodivergence a special club? I thought that just meant you think differently? But isn't that everyone? You don't have to prove yourself. You're allowed to like whatever you like. Don't make things too complicated lol. Labels should not be as important as they seem these days. Enjoy your interests. That's all that matters
