I was having a great day at work today (I just started at this new job, today was my third day) and there were these two nurses who were really rude to me and it completely tore me down to the point where I had to go in the bathroom to hide and cry. I cried the whole way home screaming that I was so depressed and unhappy that I wanted to die. I feel like from something so small, my feelings go to the extremes. Does this happen to anyone else? If so how do you deal with it?

I can totally understand this. I struggle to accept any form of criticism (whether constructive or just plain rude!). I have very little resilience at the moment, so anything like this feels like ultimate failure or guilt. I want to quit and I feel worthless and hopeless about ever 'getting things right'. The thing is, if I was to give advice to anyone else in my position, it would be to not let one negative moment spoil my day and try to think from a different angle: 1) Are these people just not very nice, to anyone? If so, don't surround yourself with them any more than you have to. Keep it to work related conversations only. You may discover they have a reputation for being rude. 2) Was something stressful or out of the ordinary going on at work to make them behave in a way they normally wouldn't? If so, tomorrow may be more positive. If, however, this seems directed at you only and turns into what could be perceived as bullying, then this is not ok and do talk to your dept manager/HR/your mentor. Please dont let them put you off your next shift. You were chosen because someone felt you'd be great for the job, and also a good fit for the team. These settling in days are the hardest. I'm sure you'll find some friends among your colleagues, and will soon feel more confident in the role and your surroundings. I wish you so much luck in your new role - I'm sure you'll be fab! x
