So I just got back from my psychiatrist and they are thinking that I have BP2, GAD, and now have added ADHD. Any tips or advice for ADHD? I had been diagnosed with the BP2 and GAD for a while, but the ADHD is newšŸ˜…

Our experience seems almost exactly the same. Glad I'm not alone. BP2 GAD and ADHD but that's relatively new and so far untreated.

Iā€™m having a similar situation. I was diagnosed with bipolar as a teen and thought I may have some form of ADD but started doing things to manage unconsciously and then diagnosed with anxiety so I just kind of forgot about it until recently. My sister has ADHD and I was looking that up to try and connect more with her and found so many helpful tips and talk to her about it and relate so much. I also have been taking PEA and tyrosine for chronic pain but found out they are also helpful for ADD and definitely noticed improvement in my executive function taking them. I brought it up to my psychiatrist and she said bipolar and ADD have a lot of similarities and she asked me questions and told me I definitely need to get tested especially since Iā€™ve still havenā€™t found psych meds that is actually helpful enough for my issues, without horrible side effects for me to comply with sticking to. I have not gotten tested yet since I figured Iā€™ve lived this long without a proper diagnosis and in the middle of a flare and behind on a lot of other things. But I will once I have the capacity to. I did start doing a lot of the things mentioned above without a diagnosis for ADD within the last few months and Iā€™m astonished how helpful theyā€™ve been regardless if I have it or not. Itā€™s just like finally this is how my brain works and now I can figure out how to roll with it and actually get some more stuff done rather than having anxiety about it and it not getting done. Best of luck and hoping you find what works for you!

Yeah, as someone with PTSD and ADHD I can say there are some similarities (can't do certain activities without sound for example). With ADHD in my experience, giving yourself a set time to walk aimlessly around the house doing random things like clean or draw or pick stuff up and interact with it for either 2 minutes or the rest of the set time. I have to set like 3 timers to get myself to stop, but it works more or less and I THINK MIGHT help me focus in other situations?

@spicysugar Also, when ACTUALLY wanting to clean, get a basket and walk around the house. Put stuff into that basket that dosent belong in that room. Once you're done, sort the box out based on room and put the box away bit by bit

@spicysugar this is so incredibly helpful! Thank you so much for your insight. I like having answers, but when it is the unknown, it can kind of be scary. I had never really thought about ADHD as a concern for me until my coworkers started to ask me if Iā€™ve ever been assessed for itšŸ˜‚ we work in the mental health field anyway, so it wasnā€™t entirely uncalled for, but it made me think. I try to steer clear of self-diagnosing, but I do myself better than anyone else you know? I guess Iā€™m just worried and would like to just get as close to being ā€œnormalā€ as possible, whatever that looks like for me.

Not saying you don't but I was in the exact same boat, GAD and BD2 for 4 years. I thought I had ADHD for a year turns out to be PTSD.

@Lucas.exe that kind of happened to me recently, but my psychiatrist told me that the flaw with that was that I had symptoms of PTSD, they just were frequent enough to be diagnosable.

How long did it take for you to get some solid diagnosisā€™? Iā€™m new to therapy

@Lemondrops I went to my psychiatrist for about 3 years before I got a solid diagnosis. Bipolar disorder isnā€™t usually diagnosed without strong evidence, so she waited and continued to assess me until she felt it was justified. I had gone to a new psychiatrist after I moved and she tried to diagnose me with something different, but I made my way back to my old psychiatrist and she completely reassessed me to make sure that she hadnā€™t missed anything. Thatā€™s how we got to where we are nowšŸ˜…
