Does it bother you when people self diagnose your clinically diagnosed disorder and treat it as a "quirky personality trait"? Asking because I am so tired of people saying they have anxiety and then announcing it to the class without panicking or someone straightening colored pencils in color order and being like "I'm so OCD" šŸ˜‘

I had someone tell me that had one panic attack lasting a couple minutes and say they now knew how I felt. They said deep breathing really fixes it and I should try doing that. Iā€™ve had anxiety disorders since I was 7, depression since 12 and ptsd since at least 17. But you know. Iā€™ve never thought to breathe before. Maybe that will fix all my problems.

I LITTERALLY JUST SAW ONE OF SOMEONE FAKI G ELHERS DANLOS, which I actually have. It made me so freaking mad. My Eds is debilitating, extremely painful, Iā€™ve had a bunch of surgeries for it, then there are people making it look cute and quirky that is not ok

@Student_girl I fully agree that it's definitely not cute or quirky. It's terrible to live with sometimes... And society is just broadcasting disorders as "quirky personality traits"

Yeeeeessss....people saying they have had panic attacks and they understand and to just do this or that...like bro, I can't focus or even breathe. I feel like I'm having a heart attack or dieing. The symptoms from the panic last 24 to 48 hrs for me and I'm exhausted. I don't think alot of people know what a true panic attack is.

@BusyB right! People are now using the term "anxiety attack" which imo is just acute anxiety or maybe a mental break down that's small... But with my panic attacks.. some symptoms linger for up to two days. It's nearly impossible for others to help me. I have to fight through it alone and try and calm myself down which takes a bit

@BusyB I know my panic attacks make me feel like the world is ending, I am drowning, so weird and terrifying. But people say it to seem cool. Itā€™s not cool.

@Student_girl I agree...it's become somthing like a popularity game of who has the most mental problems. When people who actual have to go through it would sell a kidney to not have to go through it anymore.

Right. Like I self diagnosed myself with autism and ptsd in a way to feel more genuine to myself and how I experience the world. I have difficulties getting help due to anxiety and difficulty making phone calls. I fully intend to get clinically diagnosed when I am able to get the help I need. But I would never say oh I'm so autistic if I catch myself stimming while hanging out with people. I get what you're saying and there's definitely a difference.

      • Fidgety_TG

        650d

@Ena_Silvoc yes. That kind of self diagnose is ok as long as you don't just take one symptom and announce to the world you have a disorder. I hope your journey goes well!

@Fidgety_TG of course. A lot of research has gone into it before self diagnosing. And thank you

This bugs me so so much. People do this with mental and physical diseases. I have diagnosed anxiety, depression, and anorexia, and ocd when I was younger. Less conmen but still for sure a problem, people say they have Eds or pots, which I actually have and walk with platform crutches and AFOs for. This bugs the shit out of me because people romanticize and minimize and ā€œbragā€ about these serious diseases that actually affect people including me. I could go on sorry this is kind of a rant.

@Student_girl no you're fine! I'm the same! Like my disorders are not cutesy or quirky... Like I don't go around showcasing them to everyone! Why? Because I'm ashamed of them... And it's incredibly hard to live with them sometimes. I just hate it when people "brag" about their "disorder" when Ive been struggling silently for years

I definitely think that people using mental disorders as a cutesy personality thing is wrong on all levels but self diagnosis is different IMO. Though there is a difference between looking up basic symptoms of a certain disorder and seeing that you have one of the many different symptoms means you have it and should say to the world ā€œHey I have ADHDā€ (example) VS looking into the disorder itself and seeing if things other people with ADHD do help you personally. Self diagnosis can help those who arenā€™t fortunate enough to either afford a diagnosis or are unable to get one via other issues. Not disagreeing with your original point though.

@strawberrydog true! I meant the one symptom diagnosis but I see that I should have been more clear. My apologies!

@Fidgety_TG Oh no donā€™t worry about it, wasnā€™t directed toward you at all. Sorry if it seemed like that, I was just speaking in general :D

You can have anxiety without having anxiety disorder... But i know what you mean. It is frustrating and in many cases it makes people ignore the real problem. Like when someone tells me "I'm depressed" I'm not sure they're looking for help or saying they are sad. I try not to take it personally. I hear "he's so bipolar" at least once a week, sometimes about someone moody, sometimes about someone two-faced, i gave up on trying to educate people. If they want to be ignorant, whatever.

        650d

@blueflovver yes. I'm trying not to be bothered by it but sometimes people's comments get to me

@Cece7 Exactly! I have panick attacks and one day I had a really bad one on stage (I'm in band btw and I had 8 solos and it was competition) and my legs turned purple and I almost passed out and a kid told me he related to me and then said "just breathe you're acting like George Floyd over here" and I literally felt like breaking down right there

        • Cece7

          651d

@Fidgety_TG wow such a horrible thing for someone to say to you, Iā€™m sorry you dealt with that. Just know you arenā€™t alone. That situation definitely could trigger a lot of stress and anxiety. I had to quit doing musical theater because of mine but hoping someday I can do some acting again on stage once I get more control over my anxiety. Itā€™s great that you havenā€™t given up the things you enjoy due to it. Being on stage is a lot to cope with sometimes but Iā€™m sure you will be able to work through your triggers in some form and continue doing what you are passionate about. Donā€™t listen to what others say, people can be cruel and not empathetic at all when it comes to mental illnesses.
