I just applied for college after deciding years ago that I wasn’t gonna go because my family and I couldn’t afford it. My boyfriend talked me into applying and now no one seems to be excited for me and it is kinda bringing me down and making me wanna give up. What am I supposed to do?

I’m excited for you! I’m currently in college, and it can be hard at times, but there are also aspects that can be fun and fulfilling and inspiring. I love that you want to be a choir teacher. I love music and singing and I’ve been involved in choirs for years, and my choir teachers have been influential people in my life. I’m sure you’ll touch many lives!

Well that’s okay. Maybe it just took you a while to figure out your “why” when it came to “ what you wanted to be or do when you grew up.” The fact that he suggested it could just be the way this happened. If he’s being controlling, don’t do it. If not just enjoy the journey.

I wish people were more excited and supportive, I hope you are able to focus on why you are doing this and keep your goals in mind! If you ever want to talk I’m here!

I think there's a few things here that I want to learn - 1. How do *you* feel about going to college (minus the lackluster feedback from everyone else)? 2. Do you feel like these folks are typically happy for you when something good happens to you?

@meridian 1) I am very excited to go to college, nervous and trying to figure out how to pay but still very excited 2) yes, typically everyone is very happy for me when good things happen but for some reason with this is all very “good for you ig” and it could be because I’m now the 4rd person in the family to apply but I don’t feel like that should matter

@Mellow_love Well firstly - congrats! Hopefully the school you go to has funding options for students and/or you're researching other options (state-funded scholarships, etc.). Private colleges often have generous grants (not based on grades) and fingers crossed the federal student loan forgiveness policy kicks back in. And you're right — it shouldn't matter that you're the 4th person to apply — you've also waited a while before applying and maybe you even have a better idea of what you want to do than if you were coming straight out of high school. I'm also curious what made your boyfriend talk you into applying. If you feel like you thrive in a structured school environment + have a good idea of what career you want to pursue, then yay!! But also wanted to throw out another suggestion while you're still awaiting acceptance results — are you interested in working in tech (this can be software engineering or business-related matters in tech). Because if that's the case, college is definitely not the only route into this sector, there's a lot of more affordable programs, some that offer job guarantees, internship opportunities, and certification. Otherwise, disregard — I'm glad you're going for a long-standing goal!
